Not happy about it, but not surprised. The way things are trending, who knows if the the US postal service will even still exist in fifty years.

Well, I read the article and it is a no-win situation for the PO. They are a 'private business' but constrained by the ineffectiveness of those asswipes that are in CONgress (opposite of PROgress), who put obstacles in their way that a real private business would not have to endure.

And as the article mentioned and has been known for over a decade, the Internet has dug into any profit they may have made thru personal letters and bill paying. However, raising the price of a letter will not help - ppl will just do more things by the Internet.

At the end of the article was a survey and 62% aren't concerned by the loss of Saturday delivery. On the bright side, they only have 5 days now to screw up the mail delivery.

It says they won't deliver letters, but they'll still deliver packages which is what they should do if they really are going to nix Saturday service. It sucks though. Like I said before, people really need to support them. I hope Congress intervenes and backs them. It's a staple in the American economy. Not EVERYONE has a damn computer, smart phone or then internet. And with the ridiculous amounts they charge smart phones and internet, I'm sure even more people won't have them.

Yeah, I'm hoping somebody can explain HOW this is supposed to help them save 2 billion dollars, I mean that's why, in our papers they say they're doing it.

IDK their staffing patterns or if they are using part time ppl on Saturday but if the regular letter carriers are putting in a 48-hour week instead of 40, then that is time & a half for those extra 8 hours. I used to work a 6-day a week job. The OT was what made my check.

PostSubject: Re: Postal Service to end first class mail on Saturdays   Postal Service to end first class mail on Saturdays EmptyTue Feb 12, 2013 7:45 pm

To answer Alan, it is bullshit. As Shale said, we are stuck with regulations that tie our hands that other corporations do not have to deal with--- while at the same time receiving NO tax payer money.

In 2006, George Bush obligated the USPS to pay in advance for retirement benefits. We currently are paid 75 years in advance... our future employees arent even born yet!!! When they say things like "$ billion" loss this quarter etc... they are including that payment. The PMG requested from congress to allow us to not have to make those payments, and congress did nothing. so the pmg suspended payment. Now those suspended payments are part of our "debt" a debt that will not occur for 75 years. That money is going to Office of Personnel Management.... and is included in the spending budget. So the feds required that we give them the money, then they spend the money, then when we say we paid enough... they want to make the public think we are asking for a bailout!!!

If Shale mailed a letter from FL to Alan in NJ, but Alan moved to CA... the letter enters the mailstream... goes to NJ.. then is sent to CA. The USPS does not charge for the double handling of forwarding the mail, nor for processing the address correction. 35-50 million ppl move every year... I suggested to the USPS that they charge a one time $10 fee for any address change. That could generate $500 million a year. Also, if i mail a letter to shale, and he writes REFUSED on it... i am not charged for the return. Why NOT? It had to fly twice--- and went through about 100 ppl's hands on the way. Fedex/UPS would not send a package back without payment each way. In both of these situations, congress controls the fees not the USPS. we SHOULD be able to raise rates and change services without asking an indecisive drunken daddy for permission.

Another problem with the system is that management is promoted from one particular dept. a dept which does not understand or deal with the mail flow. They keep paying independent companies to do studies about our problems, but then they have no idea how to fix the problems because they lack the experience to understand the effects of any changes.

What the PMG is proposing is that most local PO's remain opened... perhaps at shorter hours (most are already on shorter hours). The processing centers like where i work will continue to work 24hours. That means that there truly wont be any money saved on overhead for the facilities!

Second, they claim that they wont have to pay for the drivers and fuel for shipping from the processing centers to the local offices/vice versa on saturdays. LIE! The packages will still be sent to the local, but instead of returning to the plants FULL of collection mail--- they will now return empty! Each truck can only hold so much. If you normally fill one truck to collect from a local po, but do not send it... what happens when the mail still accumulates? you will need TWO trucks to pick up the mail on monday--- so the empty truck on Saturday is a waste of gas. Not to mention that all of the mail NOT being delivered from the processing centers to the locals on saturday will now be sitting in the processing centers all weekend... in our way and filling our equipment containers. SOOOO we will not have the containers we will need to process the mail already in the building! Makes no sense.

As far as the carriers are concerned... they work a five day week now. they have temporary employees that cover their day off (it is quite possible for a carrier to be off on Sun/Wed instead of the normal two days together). Also, there are many carriers... that after working there for over a decade are in flexible positions. They will not work them over 40 hours, but they do not have a set schedule.. they could work 10 hours one day, and four the next.

Will there be less carriers needed on Saturdays? yes... because they wont be going to EVERY home, just those with packages. HOWEVER, the package volume has been INCREASING with the advent of the internet.... and i can tell you that thanks for Caremark, Amazon, and Medco, my machine now processes a record 60-80,000 pieces in an 8 hour shift. We used to average about 40-45,000 pieces. If this continues, you will need more and more carriers on saturdays to deliver the packages--since that is the only thing being delivered (express mail btw is even delivered on sundays and holidays---and we DID deliver express during both hurricanes Irene and Sandy!)

IMO... it is going to cause us big money. They want to force ppl to retire, fire them, and hire temps... all corps are doing that--- i get that. but the morons created a temp position that said after a year the ppl would be entitled to health insurance. In the old days, the USPS would fire them before the year to guarantee they wouldnt pay them.. this manangement now is so freakin disorganized that they have had these ppl for over a year, and are now paying health benefits for temps that they could easily have given a furlough to for a month (even a week) without paying insurance----starting the one year clock over again.

Then on Monday, the processing centers are going to need to process DOUBLE the mail (saturday/monday) which will be delivered to the locals on Tues morning. So now you need double the processors, double the carriers---but you do not have enough bodies to cover those kinds of hours!!! smh.

sorry if i sounded confusing... i have been sending the USPS ideas for years how to save MILLIONS and all i get are responses that say :that machine is the most efficient the USPS has... thank you for your comments: smh

btw... it took me 6 yrs to get christmas day off... after 15yrs im still forced in for thanksgiving.

so this non delivery day is not truly going to give anyone off. they are discussing changing my schedule (i would have sat/sun off instead of sun/mon--but it will not save money)--- which will cause the break up of my 20 person crew that has been together for four years. Out of the 500 processing centers in the country, my crew comes up in the top three producers nightly--- us, tampa, and anaheim. so when they change things, our productivity will go DOWn cause i seriously believe i am now working with best group of ppl EVER... just cant explain our team work and love for each other if you arent involved.

I remember when the mail used to be delivered twice daily. A very long time ago. I also remember when there was a threat back in the 70's I think it was that Saturday delivery would be shut down but it didn't happen. This time I think it will.

I do know you can't find a mail box to save your life any longer.

I don't understand the reasons for all of these things. My sister was a letter carrier for fifteen years and I have been meaning to ask her opinion. But I guess this is a just a sign of the times and I feel old.

Postal Service to end first class mail on Saturdays Empty
PostSubject: Re: Postal Service to end first class mail on Saturdays   Postal Service to end first class mail on Saturdays EmptyWed Feb 13, 2013 5:52 am

There is so much more. They wanted to eliminate jobs. In my building we had 3 ppl who seperated all of the empty equipment (tubs, trays, boxes) and we knew where to go when we needed them. They abolished those jobs to save $150,000 per year. THEN signed an $80 Million contract to a company who is supposed to store empty equipment for us... when we need it, we can call and order it... receive it that day. HOWEVER... it still needs to be sorted. Because no one is sorting it... at least 20% of the building is filled with empty stuff--- AND when it does get sent to the company, no one has had the time to go thru every piece of equipment to check for lost mail. Before, if a piece of mail was left in a sack, the employ sorting would find it the same day. NOW, it could take a week for the company to find it and send it back to the processing center.

A few months ago, they decided to use my building as a national model. They sent engineers into our building to change the layout. They spend $35,000 on signs that hang from the ceiling!!! They actually put one up that says "break room" "Maintenance Department". DUH!!! Fix the freakin roof that is leaking on the million dollar machine--- but they are buying signs to make it look nice for the Post Master General who is coming next month. They keep making cosmetic type of changes instead of real ones.. and it is soooo frustrating!

What REALLY makes me laugh-- we have a professional artist in our building. They didnt even have to pay him to make the signs, he could have made them on the clock and just paid for the supplies!!! He did it 10yrs ago before this horrible management!!!

They even survey us every three months.... one of the questions said, "Do you feel safe in the workplace". Only 23% said yes. SOOOO ... instead of following up, they changed our entry ways.. so instead of coming in several different doors, we must all go in and out the same door. our hours were changed so instead of staggered start times, we all start at the same time. SOOO if someone wanted to shoot me, he knows what door and what time i am coming out of. And anyone around me is a possible victim. That makes us feel LESS safe. When i argued with our plant manager that we feel unsafe because the fire exits are blocked with equipment, the broken forklifts are not properly repaired, and the metal equipment is dangerous (one container literally cut my shirt in half and i had to have one of the medical personnel tape it up until my mom could bring me a new shirt). A metal pole fell from one container and broke my toes--- blood gushing. another woman broke her hand because of the equipment. Then they try to deny the workman's comp saying that "inattention" was the cause and so its our fault!!! SMH
