It's basically how far into the clique you are. If you tow the herd line and say what people want to say, they rate you high. If you tell people things they don't wanna hear, they vote you down. 
I forgot boards still have them. They are basically popularity contests. They seemed kind of pointless to me so I kind of stopped paying attention to them years ago.

"Rep" stands for reputation.
At the side of the posts, you'll note the "+" and "-". If you like what someone has to say, you can click on the + to vote it a good post, and that poster will be awarded one rep point. If you dislike what someone has to say, you can click on the "-" to vote it a bad post, and that poster will be "rewarded" a negative point.
(People, please don't abuse this option. The rep system has been known to cause major drama at other forums.)

LOL! I had a positive 10 reps then I posted on the One Life to Live board and I guess since I'm not a Trever St. John fan boy suddenly my reps went to -2. Dayumm!!
