White smoke billowed from the Vatican's Sistine Chapel Wednesday, indicating the cardinals have selected a new pope after two days worth of voting.

Cardinals have elected a successor to Benedict XVI, who stunned the Catholic world last month by becoming the first pope in 600 years to resign. Crowds packing St. Peter's Square were seen cheering the announcement as bells were ringing.

The new pope, who has yet to be identified, became the winner after receiving at least 77 votes, which is more than two thirds of the cardinals.

The new pope is expected to appear on the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica within an hour, after a church official announces "Habemus Papum" -- "We have a pope" -- and gives the name of the new pontiff in Latin.

The conclave drama played out against the backdrop of the church's need both for a manager who can clean up a corrupt Vatican bureaucracy and a pastor who can revive Catholicism in a time of growing secularism.

Argentinian Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio has been chosen as the new pope.

Well at least he doesn't LOOK evil. . .

Out of all the popes I've seen, I've seen none that looked evil. (Unlike many current politicians in DC.)

Reading up about him, he seems like exactly the kind of pope us Catholics knew we'd get.

The are calling him Pope Francis.

But the previous pope can't help that he looks evil on the outside - it is what's inside that matters. So, the new pope has a better outward appearance but inside is the same shit in a different package!

Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, a 76-year-old Argentinean, was chosen as the first Latin American pope on Wednesday. He will lead the world's 1.2 billion Catholics as Pope Francis. While his selection may be historic, it may also mean more of the same when it comes to gay rights in the Catholic Church.

Pope Francis is a conservative who is anti-gay marriage and anti-gay adoption. He has described same-sex marriage as the work of the devil and a “destructive attack on God’s plan.” He has also said that gay adoption is a form of discrimination against children.

Shale, there are many other unflattering terms to describe his attitude on social issues (from our point of view) but I would reserve “evil” for things like covering up for pedophiles. This isn’t an accusation against the new pope…I have no idea what, if any, his role may have been in the cover up and perpetuation of this horrendous child abuse. Possibly none whatsoever. If so, give him a cookie. Who knows? Maybe part of his aggenda will be to purge the church of these monsters. Regardless, no one is forcing gays and lesbians to be Catholics. If you don’t like the by-laws of the club…get out of the club. I’ll always scratch my head in wonder at anyone who wants to join a group that doesn’t want them.

I'm not discounting the pedophile problem in the Catholic Church. I even saw some of that while working for the Archdiocese of New Orleans in the late '70s. (The facility has since closed due to abuses before my time and the lawsuits coming from that).

And, it is not that I wish to be a part of the Catholic Church. I agree and don't know why any gay person or birth control using person or any person living in the accepted mores of the 21st century would continue to belong to this medieval anachronism, but that is their decision.

But, it is not just about being a part of the Church because the church and its adherents are involved in the politics of these supposedly secular governments and work to push their beliefs on the rest of us. That is why I and many gay ppl see them as an adversary.

Catholics have as much right to advocate for their beliefs as anyone else. And since there's very little most true Catholics advocate for (we kind of believe government's job is to keep everyone safe and little else, so we mostly advocate for government to butt out), I don't think anybody has any legitimate claims to feeling threatened by Catholics unless you are just so bigoted that knowing that somebody doesn't approve of your life choices offends you.

Either way, it doesn't matter much. I'ma celebrate a great new pope and pray for those lost in sin. Not gonna lose sleep just because standing for Christ doesn't make those attached to sin like us. Not one bit.

LOL. This is my *shocked face*.

i loved Pope john Paul II... he had a kind face and i think he genuinely wanted to help people and help mend broken bridges.

i think anyone can criticize anyone/anything for not doing enough for whatever cause that person is interested in. I can criticize the govt for not doing enough for the homeless... criticize churches for not giving enough money to starving families, can criticize the cancer society for being concerned only with cancer! LOL we can point fingers at anything or anyone.

Is there an age requirement or something to becoming the pope? It seems like they to elect mothefuckers who are near one foot in the grave to the papacy. I know I wouldn't be working at 76.

I'm not sure but I believe Cardinals over 80 can't vote for Pope. I guess that doesn't mean they can't elect someone older than that.

we all have a difference of opinions. and we all know that this is a hot topic. we also all know where we stand... so im not exactly sure why we keep getting on the same topic over and over.

its the same argument over and over:

Church=bad.... athiest = good... gays= good... devout christians = bad. broken record, record, record, record.

I don't understand why they go so old either. At 76, how long does he have to reign? Maybe a little over a decade. Plus I heard that he only has one lung. So....who knows....
