| I never read the book, but I did see the movie (which I thought was terrible.) Anyone else read the book?
Also heard that another film adaptation of it is coming soon.

| Now that's spooky, I was just asking about that a few days ago on another book board. I first heard about the book, and the movie, on I Love the 80s Strikes Back, and it got me curious...and wouldn't you know of all the books the library and the bookstore in my town covers, Flowers in the Attic is not now, nor has it ever been in their selections. And I don't like the idea of ordering it online because if it would be addressed to the wrong person and somebody else in my family opened it...that's a whole can of worms better not to get into.
I did recently see the movie, it's up on Youtube, I have to say I liked it...I especially liked how the mother died at the end, it was a real 'ding dong the witch is dead' moment.
As for the book, I asked about it and a lot of people say the same things, it's for high school girls, it's trash, it's trying to make incest okay when it's not, etc. But I don't know, I'm still curious and I think someday I'll look into reading it. My morbid curiosity always gets the better of me.

| I read the series years ago but there was too much sadness in a lot of VC Andrews books. I actually started liking the books better after the ghost writer took over. There was another series of hers that I read but just found way too depressing. The first book was "Heaven", I think - can't remember any others.
Haven't seen the movie "Flowers in the Attic" but I enjoyed that first book. Can't really remember the rest of the series, though I did read them. I liked the "Dawn" series best, which, I think, was the first series written by the ghost writer.

| I read a couple of them and was not impressed. The brother and sister thing made me queasy. | |

| Yeah - I didn't like that part, either. I think that's why i got more into the series that the ghost writer wrote. There was a bit of the brother/sister stuff, but not like in VC Andrews actual books. | |

| I read the whole VC Andrews Dollanger series as they were published. I think the first one came out in 1979 or 1980. They were very good reads for the time, but the movie "Flowers In The Attic" didn't do the book justice. Flowers In The Attic did not translate well onto the big screen because it wasn't able to delve deeply into the psychology of those children and why they did what they did. They are good reads if you can get the the subject matter and just accept them as fiction.
On that note, if you want to read a really good V.C. Andrews book that doesn't deal with incest, but crazy family drama, try "My Sweet Audrina"

| Well I wouldn't say hell's frozen over yet, but maybe close. I'd decided that if I ever came across this book, instead of actively seeking it out, that I would get it and read it, and I found it today at the thrift shop for a dime, how can you say no to that? So, I got the book and when I have the time I'll take a look at it and see what I think of it. | |

Everybody who reads the books agree that the movie pales in comparison to the original story. However, not having read the book yet, and only seeing the movie, by itself if nothing else I find the movie to be very good, it's a very creepy movie that establishes the children are close without bringing anymore incest into it than was thrust upon them by their mother and father/uncle. Personally I love the ending, I read about at the end of the first book the mother gets away remarried, NOT the case in the movie. A lot of people don't like the ending but I love it because it's a real 'ding dong the wicked witch is dead' type moment.

| saw the movie... never read the book... i know my sister read If there be thorns (think that was the one).. and she really liked it
i really liked the movie back in the day... but i saw it recently and thought it kinda stupid. if the kids were able to get out of the bedroom and roam the house, then why couldnt they pick up a phone and call for help? the grandmother acted like she had no idea that the mother was trying to kill the kids... but what the hell did she think was going to happen to them? i can understand that the grandmother was furious and disgusted by her daughter marrying and having kids with her uncle.. but as such a moral person, how could she blame the kids?

| The grandmother reminded me of Carrie White's mother, so it would make sense why she would blame the children for something they couldn't help. She's a bitch who gives religious fanatic nutjobs a bad name. I liked that in the movie they removed the sibling incest but had that scene where she sees Chris in the bathroom when Cathy's in the tub and she busts in screaming 'sinners!' and Chris points out that she WANTS to catch them doing something wrong. | |
