| How do you feel about public schools assigning school uniforms to its students?
When I was a kid, of course I would have hated it....but now I'm not totally against the idea....

| Me neither. I'm for it. I wore school uniforms for 3 years when I was in grade school and it was a policy that my school had just decided to put in place for the first time. Even back then I didn't mind it. | |

| I can see things both ways. Can't say I really have a strong opinion on this one way or another. | |

| I think it's stupid. 'Oh everybody here is an individual and we encourage you to be an individual but you must all look alike, we just couldn't have it any other way'. What effect do clothes have on studying? I fail to make the connection...it's certainly not like I spent all of math class looking at my T-shirt and jeans thinking 'I'm sooooo cool'. | |

| ^^^^ That's not hardly the object of school uniforms. I see the point has missed you by more than a mile. | |

| What is the point then? What connection do clothes have in regards to education? | |

The benefits of them include structure. Everybody at the school is on the same level and are equal so there is nobody at school getting teased because they don't have the latest tennis school or designer clothes. They promote less distractions. Going to school isn't supposed to be like go to a fashion show thus in turn, the students are more likely to take their studies a little more seriously. It's economical for the parents who may not or who have trouble trying to buy a whole new wardrobe for their child every damn school year. And most of the time, it does look better. More professional. Nobody is walking around with the pants hanging off of their asses, tight jeans and skirts, five sizes too big shirts and loud, clashing colors.

If a student doesn't want to take their work seriously, they don't need 'ooooh look at my clothes and then look at yours' as an excuse...I often slacked off in class and clothes had nothing to do with it, I thought about stuff like 'I wonder what good's on TV right now' or 'As nice as it is today, I'd rather be outside' or 'I'd rather be reading one of my own books instead of this boring one'. If kids have gotten to the point that clothes are the ONLY thing they can think about when taking their mind off school, then somewhere something happened to bring whole new meaning to the term materalistic.

Damn girl, it's still not registering huh? You don't see any benefits to school uniforms at all? I like how you only take one part of my post and then try to use some little off beat experience of yours to counteract what I said. And I said they would MORE LIKELY take their studies more seriously because trying to compete in a fashion show is ONE LESS thing they would have to worry about. It's like going to school and having a job to do. But that's so not even the point because no one said wearing a uniform means you're not going to goof off in class. Uniforms are a structured look. You don't think structure should be allow in schools? Of course, it's not a guarantee that it would make a student behave or better academically or whatever, but if the aura is there, if the general illusion is there, then maybe. So it definitely doesn't hurt. People who have jobs wear uniforms. And it's not for nothing.

| When was the last time a college university made everybody wear a standardized uniform, outside of sports teams and graduation? They don't need 'structure'? | |

| My knowledge on school uniforms comes solely from my area and from my work with kids from private schools in this area. Uniforms are somewhat a joke as they allow labels like RL or T Hilfiger on the shirts and pants. So, it did not rid the student body of having a "who's who" of fashion. But the one plus is that it did elimate any other fashion issues like jeans off the butt and that kind of thing. Overall, I am against it if it was attempted to be employed by public school, but all that I know of happen at private schools, so people know that going in. | |

| Well here's what I want to know...people say it gives the kids structure, and kids NEED to wear uniforms because the adults wear uniforms at jobs...okay, why don't the TEACHERS wear uniforms? Oh sure, they wear suits, nice clothes, but that falls more under dress code, they don't all wear a one design suits all uniform, do they? Sounds like a do as I say, not as I do sort of thing. | |

| Super, in my area, it is appalling how teachers dress. Some wear jeans during the week. It is crazy. It amazes me that there is not at minimum, dress casual, enforced for teaching staff. | |

| I can see the pros and cons of uniforms. The public school system I attended considered uniforms a few times and different reasons were cited. Some of the reasons people have mentioned here were brought up back then in my school and town. Our school didn't have a problem with kids dressing bad. The dress code was always enforced, but one problem that happened often in my school system was kids being teased for not having designer clothes or shoes. I saw that happen more when I was in middle school, in high school people didn't care too much brand names. | |

| My kids public school has a uniform policy. I actually sought a school with uniforms. I like it because it takes the focus off of what brand things someone has...Sure, they still look at each other's shoes and stuff like that, but it still minimizes the competition when it comes to clothing. Plus, it makes mornings a whole lot easier. | |
