Do you think there should be a limit on how many pets one household can have?

Absolutely. I do think that there are way too many freedoms with some people regarding pets. As with just about anything, there are exceptions, but I think that proper licensing of pets will eliminate animal hoarding. If someone feels they can house an exceeding number of pets than what their local ordinance allows, a vet reference should be required.

There is a certain amount of pets that any one person has the time for. When one exceeds a "normal" number of pets, it stands to reason that the owner's ability to care for them all comes into question.

My aunt had a large amount of pets. But she and Uncle Joe were very wealthy, her kids were grown, and they lived in a rural area outside Chicago. She had vet references that allowed her to have that amount and to keep them all licensed. She had the money and the time to do it all the right way. Most that have a large number of pets do not have the money or the time.

^^^^ You ever watch that show on TLC called Hoarders? The was this one woman who had a bunch of animals and was just living in complete filth. It was so revolting. I'm all for putting restrictions on how many pets you can have.

Ny, yeah, I have. Worse yet, there is a show (not sure what it is called) on Animal Planet that profiles people that have animal hoarding issues. It is so disturbing and sad.

Exactly who would get to decide what's enough, what's too much? And would it be according to what kind of animals you have? I used to have a neighbor who had two dogs, three cats and a chinchilla all at the same time.

super, it would depend on the place a person lives. In a city or township, there should be a limit. And if a resident seeks to exceed that limit, they need a vet reference.

ETA: I forgot to say that I think it should be maximum two pets per adult.

And what about if one relative has to watch another's pets? Like we've got one dog and one cat and we're watching my sister's two dogs and her husband's two dogs at the same time, should limits also extend to people who are just pet-sitting?

No. Pet sitting should be regarded if someone reports a pet owner. I have pet sat twice this past year, and I did not need to or want to get a village license for that.

Yep. Too many pets is not only unhealthy for a person, but is going to create a stench and debris that ultimately affects the rest of their neighbors. I think laws should be more stringent on requiring someone to have every large pet they take in licensed/registered; from there, impose a limit. No more than three at a time, I say.
