If you had a six year old son who wanted to play with a barbie doll, would you let him?

I wouldn't like it, but wouldn't tell him NO or give him any grief about it....all that does is put up a wall between the kid and you. By the time he's 10, you will have a shitty relationship. My father was like that.....I didn't wanna play with barbies (toys can be fun though....if only pop knew....), but he used to not like me watching cartoons with female leads/heroines. Nevermind that I was a cartoon junkie and watched all the Thundercats and Transformers that aired too. Jem and She-Ra were off limits. I could watch He-Man in his loin cloth though....he didn't have a problem with THAT.

Well first of all, I wouldn't have Barbie dolls, but girls' toys in general, yeah, sure, why not? After all, if girls can play with boys' toys and that's not considered weird (and they were always more fun than a lot of my stuff) then why can't boys play with their sisters' things?

No. Barbies are for little girls. Now, I would let him play with other dolls and stuffed animals.

Personally, I don't get what the big deal is. Why is the world suddenly going to end or whatever, if boys play with girls' toys?

And just who suggested that? Why would I want my son playing dress up with Barbie dolls and putting pigtails in her hair?

My friend with a son who is four was just telling me that he is into Disney Princesses right now, and has been showing a big tendency to choose girl toys at the stores. She has him pegged as possibly being gay.
Now, I don't discount some parents having a feeling that their kids might be gay at a young age, but I really don't think that toy preference alone is an indicator. With toy preference being the only thing she is basing this on, I feel she is being irresponsible and too judgemental too early.
To answer the question, I wouldn't mind if my son wanted to play with girl toys. He used to play Polly Pocket dolls with the neighborhood girls quite a bit. I probably would have never bought him his own, because toys are not cheap, and I think he had enough fun with the ones he used of his friends'.

Most likely not. I remind him that certain things are girls and certain things are for boys. If your 6 year old son wanted a dress, would you buy him one?

And if he wanted a...I don't know, My Little Pony movie, that should be out of the question to since it's marketed towards girls? What if the daughter wanted GI Joe, is that wrong too?

I don't see a big difference between a G.I. Joe and a Barbie.

Don't agree with the archaic, stereotypical gender roles.
I would let my little girl play with Spider Man & Iron Man toys, or whatever her preference is, if she's been good. So wouldn't that make me a hypocrite if I denied a son of mine a toy simply because it's not "geared towards his gender?"
A better question is why is this even a question? Are you afraid that if people let their sons play with dolls, then they'll automatically become effeminate, or "turn gay"? An even better question than that;
Why are toys for boys STILL mainly geared towards war & violence and toys for girls are STILL mainly geared towards dating, & homemaking in the supposedly so-advanced 21st century?
Why isn't anyone questioning that?

No. I know we are just talking about children, but quite frankly, people need to get over the notion that boys and girls are so much equal and every single thing that is good for one should be good for the other. Boys and girls are different. It's that simple. Especially at that age. Let them play their position. They got the rest of their lives to figure out everything else.

You seem to equate dolls as being feminine or 'girly'. A doll doesn't have to be strictly for little girls. There are dolls for both sexes. My son can play with dolls. He just can't play with no Barbie doll. And whether or not he will 'turn gay' isn't the issue. Obviously if he gravitates towards a Barbie doll and I take it from him and he still insists on playing with it (by dressing it up and fixing her hair, not by popping her head off or simulating acts he prob. has no business knowing about) then there is something going on that I don't have any control over. And I'd just mentally prepare myself for his coming out party in 10 yrs. Barbies simply aren't for little boys. Period.

So, girls MUST have pink toys and boys MUST have the manly blue and camouflage colors and girls better not watch a boy's movie and boys better not EVER watch a girls' cartoon because that's just SOOOOOO wrong since they're not equals?
And, you're at the same time saying 'if he later turns gay isn't the issue', but 'if he plays with Barbie dolls I'll look for him to come out in 10 years'. You can't have both, is him being gay simply because he likes girls' dolls the issue or not? And where does that conclusion come from? Isn't it usually the great big macho testosterone filled manly athletes that often turn out to be some of the biggest queens?

Is that such an abomination against the whole male sex or something? Why is it okay for girls to do it? Because it's what society dictates as normal behavior for girls? And who gets to decide what's normal for them? What if a girl doesn't give a crap about dolls or clothes or hair, does that mean something went wrong somewhere with her?

Did I say that? Your fucking dramatics is quite annoying, I swear. READ WHERE I SAID HE CAN PLAY WITH DOLLS. HE JUST CAN'T PLAY WITH NO BARBIE DOLL.
And, you're at the same time saying 'if he later turns gay isn't the issue', but 'if he plays with Barbie dolls I'll look for him to come out in 10 years'. And at the same time wrong. I DID NOT say my son would be gay if he played with a damn Barbie. I said if he came out 10 years later, I'd be prepared for it because his earlier behavior (being that interested in Barbie dolls) would've tipped me off. Meaning that I wouldn't be fucking surprised. If you didn't get that, well.....there is the clarification for you. How many boys you know that age even like girls? Most little boys that age think girls got 'cooties'. They don't even like fucking girls. So why wouldn't my son insisting on playing with Barbie not raise any red flags with me? I'm not going to crucify him for it, I'm not going to make him feel inadequate about it and I never said I would. I'll even give him the damn doll if he kept pestering me about it. I said Barbies aren't for little boys to play with. Point blank. And I will tell him that. You on here huffing like it's some damn injustice for not wanting my son to play with certain toys....how bout you answer the question Femme Fatale posed earlier. Would you buy little Johnny a fucking yellow Easter dress if he asked for one? And if you say you will, you're a damn fool (and prob. lying). The same reason you wouldn't buy your son a dress is the same reason I wouldn't buy my son a Barbie. Same damn concept applies. So get over it.

Because girls typically like playing dress up. If males typically liked it, this would be a different conversation. You seem to be the type that resents anything that society dictates as being 'girly'. Do you rebel that much against it? Just because you don't like doing your hair and makeup doesn't mean every female that does is 'only doing what society' says they should do. And stop pulling shit out of your ass. I never said it was an abomination against the whole male sex. I said it wasn't for little boys and you can't dispute that. It's not marketed for them and WHY? Because little boys typically aren't interested in stuff like that. Most six year old boys don't wanna become princesses. Most of them don't wanna dress up Barbie or any other 'girly' doll. That's fact honey, not fiction. Stop trying to change everything because you personally rebelled against it. They're toys marketed for girls and toys marketed for boys for a reason. Everything wasn't and isn't meant to be unisex.

If someone gave my son a toy that was typically geared towards little girls, and he was in awe of it, then perhaps I wouldn't take it from him (I would, though, warn him to be mindful of who he plays with it around.) If he asked for a girls toy, then I can see my first, second and third response being no. Hard to say. Perhaps I'd let him have something like a Cabbage Patch doll, but Barbie, Skipper and Stacy are out.
