Do you agree with Charles Barkley here, that celebrities shouldn't be held responsible for being role models to kids; or do you think that they should accept that children will look up to them, and be held accountable for the image that they put out there?

Re: Celebrity role models and kids
Celebrities need to realize that they have a largely young, and for the most part, impressionable crowd, whether they want it to be or not.
Now me personally, I can't relate much to it because when I was a kid, my role models were the 3 Stooges, so with me, there wasn't much to worry about, just a bunch of guys knocking each other around, but today? We've got rappers going on about 'break that bitch's neck, I ain't paying no child support', blah blah blah, we've got women spreading their legs to make a whole career for themselves because they are too stupid and lazy to get a real job and don't have any talent to enter any authentic form of entertainment...of course I think the parents are partially responsible too, they need to realize that constant exposure to everything that's new JUST because it's new (so it automatically MUST be good), I think they need to expose their kids to older stuff, movies and shows and people who didn't have to resort to such pathetic attempts for attention to become famous and to become somebody.

Yes and no. I get tired of hearing how celebrities are responsible for the fuck ups of their children. If you raise your children the right way, they would be able to decipher fake from reality. Anything that celebrities do and what gets put out there is because there is a market for it. No matter how dumb it may be. I listened to hard core hip hop growing up and I never wanted to go and shoot nobody.

Of course, it's one thing to just do music about it, but a lot of these guys seem to be trying to live the lifestyle too, how many rappers have we heard about in the news in the last few years going to jail for weapons charges or drug charges or even murder? You make millions of dollars and can afford anything you want and you choose to go and screw your life up like that? Says to me these guys weren't too bright to begin with, because THEY also seem to have trouble deciphering fake from reality.

Who says they're trying to live it? You can take a nigga out of the hood, but you can't take the hood out of a nigga. If they grew up in that environment, then no matter how much money they make.......it's a hard habit to break. Having money makes it even worse. You don't nor have you ever lived their life, so don't judge. Yeah, I think T.I. is stupid for getting himself into trouble again, but hey.....that's on him. He's no role model to anybody being in jail. And if a kid thinks that he is.....the parents are the one to blame if he has the mindset that jail is a badge of honor.

Growing up i never had a role model or looked up to anyone. I was my own person and still am! Parents are the ones that kids should consider role models. If they copy Britney,Paris, T.I. and much more- then it's their fault not the celebrity, who have their own kids to worry about! "Parents just don't understand" - The Fresh Prince

On "theory," I can agree with that old PSA, but the truth is that they ARE role models whether they like it or not, so it is good that some of them take it seriously. If parents raise their kids right, then they will have a sense of values that will override them being influenced by whatever nonsense their favorite celebs are getting into, but let's face it-not every kid has a strong parental base and some look to their idols are surrogate authority figures. It goes back to the old saying "it takes a village to raise a child". If you're in the public eye, you're gonna have influence.

Indeeeeeed, take for example, back in the 70s when they did Happy Days, so many kids looked up to Fonzie, even though he wasn't real...they do an episode where he gets a library card, boom boom, that week, library card registration goes up 500 percent because of him. And the show got letters from psychiatrists who worked with abused children who had become numb to what happened to them and they never cried, so they asked for them to do an episode where Fonzie cried so the kids would get the idea that it's okay. Trained professionals couldn't get through to these kids, but a TV character did.

Re: Celebrity role models and kids
Oh, that takes me back. I remember the hype over it when Barkley first said it.
Now that I am a parent, I agree. In a perfect world, celebs/athletes our kids admire would make headlines for feeding the poor, or adopting stray puppies. But that is not reality, too many disappoint in their actions.
Maybe I am the exception to the rule, but my son has always been surrounded by adults he can look up to and aspire to without them being in the public eye. And now that he is older, he is realizing that even the adults he loves and look up to in his life also make mistakes. It is reality.
I think any parent that gets pissed off because a celeb has "let their kid down" is full of it. Be a parent and be there to explain that just because they can "dunk a basketball", as Barkley said, or sing a song, or headline a movie, they are not idols. They are flawed humans.
Ironically, tonight my son and I just had a conversation about the allegations about Favre and the women that came out.

He was as crotchety back then as he is now, just 50 lbs. lighter.
