| The recent episode of Private Practice really made me think about this issue. If you had a friend, a GOOD friend(not just a mere acquaintance), and they and their spouse both died, leaving their only child orphaned, would you step up and take them in? This is also assuming that said child had no other family willing to take them and he/she is going to be placed in the system otherwise.
Now, if you don't have the means, this is understandable. But if you DO have the means, would you take her in, or let the system decide her fate?

| I'm not interested in having kids, so I would hesitate. But I might consider it, depending on how good a friend this person was. | |

| In a heart beat, I would. If I loved the friend, I would have already loved the child(ren). | |

| Depends on how good a friend they were and the personality of the kid. | |

| That was exactly the theme of the movie Life As We Know It, which I just saw for the second time yesterday.
I would like to think I could step up in such a situation and make the drastic lifestyle change it would require.
It is a moot question for me as I don't have any really close friends with children. Relatives with kids would pick a better suited relative than an old, gay, grampa, ex-hippie type to leave their child with.
But, my youngest grandson could tell you that I would likely be a good person to raise a kid. I'd probably get the kid a passport and use it as an excuse to do more travel.

| ^ No problem. Instead of inundating you all with a horde of brand new topics all it once, I'm doing a 'best of' this morning; giving attention to threads that may have not gotten the attention they deserved, or ended prematurely. | |

| I don't really want kids of my own but I wouldn't turn away my buddy's homeless child, so yeah they could crash with me. | |

| Of course I would. If I didn't have the means I would find them. | |

| No, I don't think so. I'm too old to be raising a child again, physically unable to do a good job with a child. The whole idea gives me the shudders, which I think is probably normal in a 71 year old. I would feel sorry about having to say no, but really it would be foolish of someone to ask me to do it anyway. | |
