Has anybody here ever been summoned for jury duty and if so, did you actually make it onto the jury and what was it like?

I was summonsed to jury duty twice. The first time I called the number on the summons and made up some elaborate tale about why I couldn't participate and they rescheduled it. The second time I was summonsed about a year later. My mom urged me to just go and so I did. I actually enjoyed it. It only lasted two and a half days.

I have been called several times for jury duty and usually it is just one wasted day and I have never been selected. However, after being away for 3 weeks in Sep I checked my mail on Saturday and found the summons for jury duty on Monday.

So, figured it would just be one more day behind at work. Turns out they took about 120 of us as prospective jurors on a possible 3-week civil case. As it was I wasted a whole week as the lawyers for both sides questioned all of us, releasing some each day. I was in the last 20 to be cut loose a wasted week later.

Had I been picked for that jury duty on Sep 27, it would have ended on Friday, Oct 15.

The case was a woman, my age suing tobacco companies because she got sick after years of smoking and needed a lung transplant. As the two lawyers were questioning us to eliminate those not favorable to their side, I felt I could not give this woman Phillis Frazier any compensation for her continued ignorance to the fact that CIGARETTE SMOKING IS BAD FOR YOUR HEALTH AND MAY KILL YOU!

I am a former smoker - sorry no sympathy from me. Nor do I buy that crap about addiction (which was brot out in this case - expert witness said a little more addictive than coffee).

I am so glad that I was finally cut loose from this jury. I really was growing resentful of all the time and expense wasted so that this selfish woman could try to make someone else pay for her mistakes. Bad enuf that 120 of us were called in and a week later the last 20 of us were let go and 8 remained to continue this lost cause. She lost the suit and got no money from RJR or Phillip Morris.

Apparently most ppl think the same way about these selfish, frivolous suits because the tobacco companies are consistently winning. Maybe the plaintiffs in these cases will give it up and quit imposing themselves on us who are stuck with jury duty.

I have been called 3 times and have been picked as a juror each time. When they start questioning me they end up throwing me out. Must be something I say that they don't like. Smile

I've been summoned numerous times over the years but I've only been on two juries. One was a personal injury case and the other was medical malpractice. Basically the same thing.

The personal injury case was more than thirty years ago. I can’t remember exactly but I think we found for the defendant. The requirement of county I was living in at the time was you had to serve for one week or one case. I got picked for this toward the end of the week so I was there for the whole week. My panel got called up for an earlier case involving a young woman charged with a narcotics charge. The judge was really cool and told our group what to do when our number was called...name, rank, serial number type info and if we thought the nature of the charge would make it difficult to be impartial. It became quickly obvious that the prosecutor was challenging people who looked young and liberal and the defense attorney was challenging people who looked older and conservative. At the time I looked like the former. I happened to be the last one left in my group to be called and had already made up my mind that I wasn’t going to give the prosecutor the satisfaction so after I gave my name, etc. I told the judge that I would have difficulty being impartial and he thanked me and sent me back down stairs.

The second time the deal was one day or one trial. That’s where I’m still living. The malpractice claim wasn’t that the surgeon botched taking the guy’s gall bladder out but that it shouldn’t have been removed in the first place. This time we were supposed to tell the court if we or anyone close had ever had a problem with their gall bladder or if we knew anyone close in the medical profession. Hey, no problem! My wife had a gall bladder attack years ago and my mother had been a nurse. Yep…just sit back and be excused. Before I know it though both sides are telling the judge that the jury is fine with them. We thought the guy was just looking for a payday.

Every other time I’ve gotten a summons I either didn’t have to go or I had to go to the courthouse only to be excused from there because they had more than they needed. I just know I’m going to go home and find a summons in the mail.

For the most part. You have to be fully prepared to serve on the date they tell you. But you gotta call in and ask if they need you before you actually go in. Works for me, I can tell work that I'm not coming in because I have jury duty, then there's the strong possibility that I won't even have to serve. Free day for me.

What - she won the lottery and she's kicking me to the curb? No, not yet anyway. It was a jury duty summons for our daughter (who doesn't always come home from work in the best mood.) We were not looking forward to telling her. Turns out, she was cool with it and was actually kind of looking forward to it if she does wind up having to go. She's #700 something and you have to call the night before and a recording will tell you if you have to show up. The higher the number and you have a better chance of not having to go.
