My mother and I have opposing viewpoints on this. She thinks it IS hypocritical to have beer and stuff in the house that you drink but tell your kids that you can't. I don't see it being anymore hypocritical than telling kids they can't drive when YOU do, although it wouldn't upset me any if they lowered the age to start learning at, but I digress. I think most age limit laws are stupid, but the fact that they exist presents a set of rules that have to be abided for the time being. Sure, it's easier just to not have stuff in the house that everybody can't get their hands on, but not everybody does that.

Well, I disagree that it is hypocritical for alcohol in my home because my son can't have it. If he wants to be afforded everything in this place, he certainly can be afforded a portion of the bills, and that lawn mowing money shall be mine.

I have alcohol in my house and he knows he can't touch it and he will know that until he is 21.

The way I see it is that if we have a few alcohol beverages in this house on the weekends, and he is home, that is our right because we are old enough and bought it ourselves, and he is not old enough to partake.

I am 110% against people who let their minors drink with them.

And for the most part I agree, but the funny thing is that at 18 the law considers you an adult for everything else but for alcohol you are still a minor, so how the hell does that work? You can buy cigarettes, can get married, can buy your own place, can vote, can enlist in the army, go over to the other side of the world and get blown to bits, you're adult enough for all that but not to buy or drink a beer?

Well that is a debate that is spoken often. I think, for me, why I would never advocate an 18 year old buying and consuming alcohol is because, #1, they are not mature enough to make good decisions. Be it, a kid getting behind the wheel or a young girl at a party/bar drinking too much and being taken advantage of. I know there is not a huge difference between 18 and 21 for most of that, but fact is, there is a big enough difference to make it important.

#2, 18 year olds have many friends who are minors. So, then the scale just gets younger.

I should add that I literally just found out from a message from my step daughter that a local tavern was shut down because the owner could no longer make the payments. I was so happy to read that, as this guy let minors drink there, and never did note designated drivers. I am happy he got shut down.

So, to further prove my point, if a bar owner lest less than 21 drink there, if the age is 18, how low will some bar owners allow?

There's nothing hypocritical about having alcohol in a house with minors in it. Alcohol is legal for adults and illegal for children.

But...if your kid was 18 and wanted to join the army and be shipped off to the Middle East where he might be killed, he's mature enough to make that decision? The law certainly says he is on that one. So, decision to go to war, good enough at 18, decision to drink a beer, unthinkable?

Yeah, that inequity has always been a sore spot for those of us affected. It was worse when I was 18 and you did not choose to go into the Army - they forced you against your will - yet you were not old enuf to drink alcohol, or to vote against the old asses who were sending you to hell.

But we digress. I don't fine it hypocritical to drink alcohol or do any of the other adult things you do and deny your kids. It is just the natural order. They are children. Now, when they reach their teens it is all moot because if they want to try booze they can find a way. I used to take a swig out of my folks gin bottle in the cupboard when they weren't around.

Not unless you're slurring your words and can't stand up straight when you tell them.

The bank, but surprisingly had not been shut down by the cops prior.

No, because there are some things in life that are options for adults, but not children. Alcohol is one.
