Is a parent giving their child the same first name as them a tacky display of arrogance, or a sentimental gesture? Would you ever name your child after you? (if you have, why did you do it?)

Re: Naming your kid after you...
I am not a fan of kids being named after their parents, nor would I ever name my daughter after me. If I had a son, the most I would agree to would be his fathers first name being used as his middle name, but none of that Jr./III/IV rhetoric. I would not even care if it were a longstanding tradition in his fathers family, that buck would stop with me. Let the child have his own identity.

^ Agreed. I'm not into name-saking kids. I wouldn't name my daughter after me either and the only way I'd name my son after his father would be if his father died before he was born. The passed down surrname is enough IMO. Otherwise, he's getting an original name.

I am not a fan of girls being named after their mothers. But for boys, I like it. I think that it kind of stinks when people choose super-trendy names. I often wonder how often parents regret in later years going super trendy.

I think "Lil'..." and "Junior" are tacky. If you're going to name your son after you, then just make sure he has some sort of original alternate name that he can be known as.

There's no way I'd name my daughter after me, forget it.
I would be willing to name my son after his father, if his father had a cute name that had a short-for/alternate name (like Christopher/Chris, Anthony/Tony, etc., etc.)

Re: Naming your kid after you...
Hi everyone. Im new to the forum. I hate the idea of giving a child the name of the father or mother. I think a child should have their own name because they are their own person and it kind of puts pressure on the child to be like the parent.

I would NEVER name my child after me...however, I would give name my daughter after MY mother because hers isn't a name too widely used anymore and I want it to live on.

I'm a "III"!
I don't plan on ever having children but if I had a son, he would be the IV. Just family tradition is all. Besides I came up with my own unique common name that most people call me by, I'm rarely confused with my dad. My government name is mainly used for documentation.

I'm not against it, although if I named my kid after me, it'd likely be a middle name. I'm too creative to name my kid after me.
