I think life is more complicated than that. Are you always honest, or do you recognize when blurting out the truth won't help anything, may cause a shitstorm and leave some things unsaid? Just saying honestly is the best policy is leaving out a whole lot of info IMO.

I agree. There are times things do need to be said but there are also times it's best to just keep your mouth shut. Everyone's honest opinion isn't necessary in every situation. If it really serves no purpose it's sometimes best to just say nothing.

Well said. Sometimes it is best to stay mum. I try to be a very honest person, but I am so bad about lying to not accept plans. We get so many invites, and instead of just saying, "No I would rather be home alone with my family that night," I will make up an excuse not to go.

I undertake to observe the rule to abstain from false speech. That is the Buddhist version of Thou shalt not bear false witness.

I try to be honest but total honesty is ultimately anti-social. "No that dress doesn't make your butt look fat, your fat butt makes your butt look fat." Plus, it could be dangerous.

However, I do lie every time I donate blood. I blatantly tell them on their form that I have never had sex with another man. To date I have donated over 5 gallons of disease-free blood, which would come to an immediate and permanent end if I once told the truth on their form.

So, honesty is not always the best policy if a stupid, discriminatory question is asked.

Generally I do think that truth is better than a lie, but sometimes it's better to omit the truth with silence.
