What are your thoughts about this teacher incentive?

Since I just found out about this today, and we are discussing athletes' grades in another thread, I had to ask you all this.

My son's Math teacher has a deal with his Math students for any who get straight A's (not just Math, but across the board). The deal is they can come with fellow straight A students to his home on a Saturday to play retro (Atari and Sega) video games for an afternoon.

I will let my son go, but I really feel that it is a strange thing to do. Really, I don't know why any teacher would open his home to that kind of thing. I guess my mind always goes to worst case scenario, and I wonder what compels a teacher to open his home to students. There are a lot of things that could go sour with such an incentive.

FYI, I don't get a "creeper" factor with any of this...he is married with kids, and his kids will be in attendance.

So, thoughts? Do you think he is opening himself up to anything having students in his home?

Red, I'll be honest...when I read that I immediately thought of a creepy scenario too, but that's just my filthy mind. When I was in school, I recall teachers who would let groups of students occasionally visit their home, so that's not too uncommon. But it seems weird to me that these kids in the age of PS3 and Wii would feel an extra incentive to maintain a 4.0 average just to play Atari and old school Sega. They can come over my house and play with my old system for $5 even if they're failing. LOL

    LOL! That is funny!!

This teacher is a really fun guy who can do a Rubix Cube in less than three minutes and he is really into all the retro games, so the theme of his invite is not all that strange.

My mind would have gone the same way yours did, other than the fact that I have met him and that he is in contention for an assistant principal job right now. Not to say that doesn't make him a creeper, I just don't think he is. Yet, I think it is not the best idea on his part.

Our teachers never had us over for anything...but I was friends with a few who had teacher parents (small town high school) and I have to say that it is quite the thing to see your teacher out of his or her element.

I'm as surprised as Cateyes is about the Atari & old Sega incentive working, but if it does then that's great. When I was in school our math teacher offered to take the top 2 class GPAs from each of the 6 periods on a skiing trip. Needless to say I was never in the running but fuck I don't like skiing anyway.

I am a crime writer and I watch Criminal Minds(and sometimes catch a few other procedurals). Right away, that sounded immediately creepy. Not to mention it sounds like a pretty weak incentive. Get straight A's and all I get is to come over and play old video games? FORGIVENESS MAN

FM, my son and his crowd have been "raised" on PS2. So that vintage stuff is funny/fun to them.

Okay, funny/fun but motivation to maintain straight A's? IDK, sounds a bit of a hollow motivation. I can't see how it'd keep their grades up if the motivation of doing well didn't already do that.
