| How do you feel about judges giving convicted criminals a choice between either going to prison or serving in the military? | |

| I don't know how much good that would do.....but I would personally choose that option. Prison is NOT for moi. | |

So would I....I think I heard that they used to do that once upon a time during wartime (give criminals the option to go to prison to battle.) It's about the only time I'd be willing to serve.

| It would depend on what they did - wouldn't want a hardened criminal in the military, as putting a gun in the hands of a killer might not be the best idea but for other offences, it might be an option so long as they had to stay in the military for as decent period of time. | |

| My stepbrother was a bit of a troublemaker when we were teens. He got popped by the cops in a burglary and my stepdad had to deal with it. He was given the option of joining the Army, which he did.
So here I was a nerd in HS while my outlaw stepbrother of the same age was a soldier in the Army. (A few months later after graduating I was in the Air Force, but you know how long "a few months" is to a teen.)

| Giving criminals weapons sounds like such a good idea! (Not) I guess if they did something petty, maybe. Maybe then. | |

It depends on how old they are and how serious their crime was. If we are talking about a young person (18-25) who could potentially be rehabilitated into a disciplined and responsible member of society, then I think it's a good idea as long as their crime wasn't that serious. If their crime was something like multiple DUI's, drug possession, assault & battery, trespassing, vandalism, theft, etc, it's a good indication that they grew up without any discipline in their lives and going through boot camp and learning things like respect, honor, teamwork, leadership and followership is a good way to instill a sense of value and discipline in their lives. However, if we are talking about an "adult" (over 25) or someone guilty of serious crimes like illegal gun possession, assault with a deadly weapon, selling drugs (narcotics, not marijuana), manslaughter, rape, etc, then NO, these people should not be allowed in the military because they will not only be a danger to other servicemembers, but they are most likely beyond that type of rehabilitation. Obviously white collar crimes like, fraud, tax evasion, money laundering, etc. wouldn't benefit from military training and the military wouldn't benefit from them either. So it all depends on the type of criminals we are talking about and how old they are.

If we're talking about petty thieves or delinquency, then being sentenced to serve time in the military may actually be a good way to put some structure in their lives. If someone was convicted of murder, or attempted murder, then giving them license to weapons wouldn't be a good idea.

I do not think this would be a good idea. Criminals have done something against the law, why should they be given a choice as to what their punishment is? That's insane. I say send them straight to prison and make them rot there.

So, you are saying that instead of my brother being given the option of going into the Army when he got arrested and actually becoming an accomplished part of this nations defence in which he served honorably, he should have gone to jail at great expense to the taxpayers?
Just on a fiscal basis that seems self-defeating, not to mention that it worked out OK for my brother, the Army and our nation that he did not go to jail.
