    Conspiracy Theories Empty Conspiracy Theories

Post by TPP Thu Dec 23, 2010 2:45 pm

Do you have any of your own or that you believe in?
How do you react when someone tells you one that you don't believe and they keep talking about it?
I have a cousin in law who keeps warning me that I need to start storing food and it makes me really nervous. I don't have the space or the money to stockpile food so I just ignore him, but to be honest whenever he talks about it I get really uneasy and have to distract myself because I don't want to think about it. Then I start to feel like I'm letting my family down by possibly burying my head in the sand and not preparing for downfall of the USA or whatever...

Anyway, I'm just curious what other people think?

I personally (due to my experiences this Christmas) think that the big corporations conspire with the shipping companies to get people to buy presents that they know they can not deliver before Christmas. Probably not much of a conspiracy theory, I know Smile

I've said for years I think that the weight loss corporations are in cahoots with the clothing industries, so they make women's clothes too tight to fit for the right size so the women think they're all fat and spend a lot of money on anything that promises weight loss, so all the companies win big.

Sometimes I'm a little worried about 2012 too...Then I'm like "What am I gonna do about it?" and I let it go. If the world's going to end then I'm pretty sure me worrying about it now isn't going to stop it! Plus I remember y2k and that all turned out okay, although admittedly it was totally different circumstances...

As for the clothing...I definitely wouldn't put it past them, but I feel like sizes are getting BIGGER not smaller. I wore a size 9 in JR's when I was 10, and now I wear a 5 in jr's or a 2 in womens and I KNOW I'm not smaller than I was then!

I'm not at ease with the 2012 talk either now that you bring it up. I may not buy into it but I still wish they would hush up about it.

I guess if you count everything labeled a conspiracy theory, I think a few have validity and thus I believe in them. I don't get too caught up in them though. I typically just don't see my beliefs as conspiracy theories cause they really don't meet many definitions of it, and I ain't going no extra miles to convince anybody else of 'em.

As for the infamous 2012, I am worried, but not for the same reasons anyone else is worried. I am no more convinced that the world will end in 2012 than I am that it will in 2011 or 2013. It's a date, like any other, and going by the track record, every single "end of the world" date has been wrong. What I AM worried about is what the whackjobs that buy into it are going to do in response.

^^I remember the Y2K'ers got a little nutty. I've always found the whole Mayan calendar thing to be fascinating. I have some concern but I think it will just come & go like any other day. But I expect some people to get a little crazy. The closer we get to it the crazier they will get I think.

What're you thinking, FM? Like maybe some people who buy into it, there might be another Jonestown thing going on with hundreds of people killing themselves because they truly believe the end has come or something?

IDK if it'll be quite that extreme but a bunch of people all thinking that the world is ending at the same time can never be a good thing. People convinced they'll be dead at a specific time do nutty things. So yeah, I am a bit concerned with what they'd do. Even if they don't go offing themselves(they're never usually considerate enough to ONLY off themselves), they can still go crazy and vandalize or have drunken rages.

My mom thinks that 2012 is going to be a mass spiritual awakening and GOOD things are going to happen rather than bad.

I personally suspect that the Mayan Calendar had to end sometime so it did on that date because of some astrological thing...Like they thought, this will be a significant date so lets end it here, rather than trailing off...But I'm completely uneducated about it, that's just from what I read in Discover magazine.

I had this one guy going on and on about how the moonwalk was a conspiracy and it got to the point where I had to end the conversation, as I was going to start laughing at him. He sounded so ridiculous - he seemed to buy into ALL of the conspiracy theories and he was trying to quote sources, like how the moonwalk was filmed in a studio and didn't really happen because youtube had a clip where the scenery falls down. He went on about 9-11 being a cover-up planned by the president and a few others, but I was half-tuning him out by that point, as he was sounding really paranoid.

Oh I definitely think there is a good chance for something very good to happen in 2012, but it's got nothing to do with the Mayan's or their calender. Razz

But in terms of the significance of that date, it's just another date. If it makes people feel better, I've also heard that we got until 2017 before the end, so you might get an extra five years. Wink

That was just one outtake. There is another where Neil Armstrong is jumping off the module ladder saying "One small step for a man ..." and lands on a huge cockroach skittering across the "lunar" surface. You hear some guy in the background laughing "... and one giant squish for mankind ... CUT!"

Nah, I just made that up, but wouldn't doubt that someone else beat me to it. There are 6 billion ppl on this planet. If 1 tenth of 1 percent of them were nutcases, that would be millions of them wouldn't it. Keeps the place interesting tho.

First, How do you prepare for the downfall of an entire civilization. The few survivalists are just going to revert back to our tribal warfare as our species has been doing since forever and their dystopian existence will be merely survival. I think I'd as soon check out of that existence.

Second, don't suppose that our "civilization" will entirely collapse. We may live under any kind of martial law or despotism of the powers that be and our only choice then is to surrender or join the resistence. There's no way to prep in advance for that. You would have to have military prowess to hit the "empire" with their own weapons, which your resistence would have to appropriate. Now that I could see as an interesting dystopian existence - but it's been done before when civilisation collapsed in Europe and Asia in the 1930s & 1940s.

I believe it was the late JC who said "There will always be wars and rumours of wars." Can't really dwell on it too much.

As a culture, I think we just need something to be paranoid over, that's where the whole "2012" thing comes from. Just a rehash of Y2K (did you store enough water?...did you back up the files on your hard drive?, etc.)

Heh. I remember after Pac died a friend of mine refused to believe he was dead and swore to the rumor that he would reemerge the next summer to give a concert. It's been how many summers now?

Single handedly? No. But I do believe she was a contributing factor. John & Paul had issues for years. They had very different styles. Even though the songs were credited to "Lennon/McCartney" it was easy to figure out who wrote the song. Yoko was probably just the proverbial "straw".

There is a man that works for my guy and he drives me insane with all of his theories on Obama. They are all far-fetched and it is hard to be polite when he speaks his dribble. The last time I had enough. He said, in conjunction with his Obama rants, "I bet the White House employs at least 15 people full time." That spoke volumes to me about how not only is he an alarmist with a bunch of b.s., he is also very stupid.

LOL, no..he literally meant 15. I specifically asked, "You think they employ less than 20 people?" He said, "Yeah, less than 20, but at least 15." That was on a day we had a snow storm and we needed him to run a salter on a plow truck, but it took total restraint not to call him a dumb ass.

Not singlehandedly but I presume she was whispering in his ear, feeding his ego and fueling his contentious attitude that made him impossible to deal with. Yoko seemed to want John all to herself and didn't even like sharing him with his son Julian.
