Most people know that staring is rude. I have noticed that here in the area where I live, people don't refrain from staring at others. If I see the same person or people regularly in social settings, a few have been chronic starers. These are people that I do not know. I don't know if they want me to put on a show, say hello, get to know them or what. What do you think?

I hate when people stare at me. Clearly you got something on your mind to be eyeing me that hard, you got something to say say it.

I find it to be very odd. I wonder what it is about me that keeps them in such wonder. I usually assume it is negative and feel very strange when stared at.

I usually ignore it but if they persist I always acknowledge them. They usually stop. Unless I really think they're being a jerk it doesn't annoy me. I figure they may think they recognize me or I remind them of someone. But if I think they're deliberately being rude I sometimes add "How ya doin'?"

sometimes I think people do it to assert their dominance over others, sometimes I think they are just day dreaming, and sometimes I think they are shy and want to get the nerve to talk to the person they are staring it.
It makes me uncomfortable when people are staring at me, but I just smile at them and use their reaction to guess which one I think it is. If they smile back I think they are shy, if they don't do anything I think they are daydreaming and if they make a stern face I think they are asserting their dominance and I stick my tongue out at them.

I find prolonged staring to be very odd, uncomfortable and of course rude. It's as if someone is looking through you.

Perhaps for the most part. Most people aren't comfortable with it.

Deep staring usually means one or two things, that they're interested or that they're plotting against you. Because the latter probably doesn't happen as much as the former, I can't say that I'm all that bothered when guys heavy stare at me!

I hate to say it, but my first thought is that there's something wrong with them. It's common among the kids I work with - special needs kids - and something they have to be taught not to do. Sometimes I'll stare back at them for a few seconds and if they don't break their gaze, then I say hello, which is usually enough to make them stop staring. I've noticed that certain cultural groups will stare more than others - immigrant/non-resident groups - from certain countries. Maybe they're curious but yeah - it's pretty rude? We had a Japanese exchange student who was ALWAYS staring and it drove me crazy so I started asking her if she was okay or wanted something every time I caught her staring at me. After several weeks, she finally stopped. I just wish I'd thought of it earlier in her stay, rather than letting it go on for several months. She didn't stare nearly as much after about 3 weeks of me asking her if she was okay or needed something. Sometimes I'd have to ask her 3 or 4 times in the space of an hour, if we were together for a longer period of time.
