Should there be a minimum age for the purchasing of condoms?

There used to be a time when condoms couldn't be sold to anyone under the age of eighteen; even if you don't believe that should be the cut off point, do you think that there should be a minimum age for being able to purchase them? As it stands now, there isn't.

wit girls gettin pregnant younger and younger, i dont think there should be an age minimum.
it'd be weird tho if an 11 or 10 year old came in to buy condoms.
i used to work at a gas station, and they're was this like 15 year old guy who used to come in, kinda often, to buy condoms. i just thought it was better safe than sorry for this kid.

I don't think there should be an age limit either, but I recall being about twelve years old, going to a gas station and buying a box of condoms. Not for sex, I just wanted the balloon (and to see if I could get away with buying them.) The funny part, though, was that the older guy behind the counter thought it was cute that I was buying condoms; assuming I was going to get some. Practically beamed, and offered to put them in a bag for anonymity. lol
I wonder what his reaction would have been if I had been a girl.

No. I'd rather someone who is going to have sex anyway make it safe regardless of age. It's a lot better than ending up with an STD or pregnant.

No, if kids are going to be having sex, its best to have them protected.

No....but if a kid that looks 10 years old comes up and throws rubbers on the scanner, I wouldn't fault the checkout girl for asking a question or 2 (as she's scanning it.)

Do they have condoms that fit 10 year olds?

Yes, they do make a smaller than average condom, but they have to be special purchased. Assuming the 10-year-old isn't prematurely into puberty and has one bigger than yours.Tony Marino wrote:Marc wrote:No....but if a kid that looks 10 years old comes up and throws rubbers on the scanner, I wouldn't fault the checkout girl for asking a question or 2 (as she's scanning it.)

No, there should be no age limit on buying condoms. While it would be odd to see an 11 year-old buying condoms, what else should he do? He certainly isn't going to avoid sex now that he's made up his mind, so it's better to be protected against pregnancy and STDs. Everyone should practice safe sex, whether they're 12 or 20.

I think condoms should legally be sold to anyone 12 and older.Chris wrote:There used to be a time when condoms couldn't be sold to anyone under the age of eighteen; even if you don't believe that should be the cut off point, do you think that there should be a minimum age for being able to purchase them? ITA that there shouldn't be an age limit but I would wonder at a 10 year old buying condemns.

Logically I think there shouldn't be an age limit on condoms because putting an age limit on it inadvertently gives license to sex being permissible by THAT certain age, and that would put conservatives in a snit.
I'm not picking on captainbryce, but I'll use his example:
if kids had to be at least 12 years old in order to buy condoms, it would get spun that the government was telling 12 year olds that it was ok to have sex.
I think leaving it open and vague causes less backlash.

You can't stop "em with an age limit. Same thing goes for drinking. If they're gonna to do it, they're gonna do it, right?

That's garbage and plain ole laziness. "If they're gonna do it, they're gonna do it." What's the point of any laws or restrictions then? lol That attitude always struck me as an excuse for willful blindness.tmontyb wrote:Forgiveness Man wrote:^^^^Without an age limit, you can't stop 'em.

Well, as Chris stated out the outset, there isn't an age limit. But, as a private entity, I believe it is legal for a store to refuse service under certain circumstances. If a 10 year old tries to buy a pack of condoms, I think there is ample legal precedent for the person behind the counter to tell the kid to get lost.

Pretending that kids aren't going to have sex (whether you want them to or not) is willful blindness. Saying that they shouldn't have access to condoms WHEN they decide to have sex is willfull ignorance (which is even worse). The point of laws and restrictions depends on the law or the restriction. There is no point in having a law that prevents "underage" persons (whomever you hold that to be) from buying condoms.Forgiveness Man wrote:That's garbage and plain ole laziness. ^^^^^It is neither willful blindness nor willful ignorance. It is a refusal to be lazy and enabling. And if it applies to sex, it can apply to anything. Don't be a parent cause your kids will do what they want anyway?

The existence and availability of condoms doesn't hinder a parent from preaching all the "no sex" jargon to their kids that they want.

Never said it did. The availability of anything doesn't hinder a parent from teaching anything. That's not the point.CatEyes10736 wrote:The existence and availability of condoms doesn't hinder a parent from preaching all the "no sex" jargon to their kids that they want.
