So long Sexual Revolution 70s, disco balls, bellbottoms, afros and John Travolta; hello Reagenomics, Pac-Man, AIDS, Thriller, Dynasty, FOX network and Michael J. Fox. Goodbye porno theaters, hello VHS.
I remember once saying to my dad that it was hard to believe that the 80s came after the 70s (as far as social climate went) and he agreed.
If you were around at the time, how was the 80s for you?

Yep, spent the entire decade in a monogamous marriage, played family man, launched the daughter into self-sufficiency, worked various human services jobs including Certified Nursing Assistant (and one as a warehouseman/driver for an A/C supply co). Got into more creative stuff like fotografy, art and writing. Pretty serene, quiet time except for activism against the conservative bent of the time.

I loved the 80's. I lived in Chicago for most of it. I think it was 87 that we left.
I look back on the 80's, and maybe it was just my youth, but there just seemed to be so much color. The 80's were colorful. "Hot Pink" became all the rage.
I don't really have anything insightful to say about the 80's other than what I learned in text books about the important history as I was too young to grasp the true sense of the time.
Our neighborhood in Chicago wasn't perfectly safe, but it was safe enough for me to be outside alone. Now, it is not safe for me to go there alone. That is a very sad change from then to today.

To me, the 80s was the golden age of heavy metal where great bands like Twisted Sister, Iron Maiden, Motley Crue and many others rocked arenas around the world. Unfortunately, the decade brought a lot of inotlerance as well as a result of the conservative backlash of the Regan years. We had such things as the PMRC and Jesus freaks harassing people at concerts. For a good account of the 80s, I can recommend the book Rock And Roll Children by Michael LeFevre.

There's so much I hated about the 80s but 1983 thru 1987 were pretty good for me personally.

One thing I notice about early eighties music is how 'lite-FM' so much of it was. It almost seems as though by 1980-1982, the disco seventies (and the sexual revolution it played soundtrack to) had left the world so disoriented that it needed to take a Sedative to calm itself down, and as a result acts like Air Supply, Foreigner and Christopher Cross were being heavily embraced. Seems the music of the eighties didn't start becoming colorful and high energy until around circa 1983.

Best. Decade. Ever.
The movies were so unafraid to be goofy. And the music was tops.
You can't touch Madonna, Janet Jackson, Grace Jones, Cyndi Lauper, Duran Duran, and Queen.
