What do you think about hospitals restricting access and updates to immediate family only? If someone had an accident and was brought in by a friend, do you think said friend should able to see them?

Yes, and everyone who has a friend or roommate they consider family should PLAN AHEAD, with a durable power of atty, designating a Health Care Surrogate for medical decisions in the event you are unable to do this yourself, which puts that friend in the loop and even excludes family, because some people are closer to friends than they are to blood relatives.

(Of course that usually means GAY FRIEND)

Without question. Sometimes a friend is more like family than a "blood" relative.

I think people should be asked whether or not they want non family to have access to their bedside.

Yes sometimes a close friend can bring more comfort than a family memeber!

I think it should be up to the patient, but close friends should be welcome.

As Shale was speaking of, part of the problem has been that the patient may be in a condition that leaves them unable to let anyone know their wishes. If a person is very ill sometimes you will see money grubbing "family" members fly in like vultures keeping friends & loved ones away. So planning ahead is a good idea.

Yes, definitely. What if you have no family?

I never under why hospitals are so bent on allowing only immediate family having access. When it comes to life/death decisions....ok....but if I take a friend to the hospital who just had a near death experience, I should be able to go into their room.

I think they should be able in an instance where the patient can't say anything, and the friend is the one who went with them to the hospital.

I think hospitals ought to allow people to name certain others (beyond immediate family) as being able to have access to their bed past visiting hours.
