AMC Theaters To Bring Back Sixteen Candles for Valentine's Day
AMC Theatres (AMC), a leading theatrical exhibition and entertainment company, is proud to partner with Universal Pictures to offer guests the chance to see the hit romantic comedy SIXTEEN CANDLES for a limited time, exclusively in more than 150 theaters.
Together with Universal, AMC will feature a digital presentation of this classic movie that was originally released on May 4, 1984. An iconic movie from the 1980s, SIXTEEN CANDLES stars Molly Ringwald, Anthony Michael Hall, Michael Schoeffling and Justin Henry while featuring John Cusack, Joan Cusack and Jami Gertz. Now more than 25 years later, AMC guests can laugh and swoon again at some of the great lines delivered by the cast, such as Hall’s famous line “Can I borrow your underpants for ten minutes?” which was voted #86 on the “The 100 Greatest Movie Lines” list by Premiere magazine in 2007.
“Bringing back the iconic romantic comedy SIXTEEN CANDLES for Valentine’s Day weekend is a no-brainer,” said Robert J. Lenihan, president of programming at AMC. “We are pleased to partner with Universal to offer guests the opportunity to relive the ups and downs of being a teenager in love, when this PG-rated movie hits the silver screen again.”
SIXTEEN CANDLES grossed more than $23 million at the box office and ranked #44 on the list of top grossing movies of 1984. Directed and written by the late John Hughes, SIXTEEN CANDLES is the story of Samantha Baker’s life going downhill fast. The 15-year-old has a crush on the most popular boy in school, and the geekiest boy in school has a crush on her. Her sister’s getting married, and with all the excitement the rest of her family forgets her sixteenth birthday. Ringwald and Hall were both 16 when the movie was released and both won Young Artist Awards for Best Young Actor/Actress in a Motion Picture − Musical, Comedy, Adventure or Drama. “SIXTEEN CANDLES is a timeless story beloved by people of all ages,” said Nikki Rocco, president of distribution at Universal. “We’re thrilled to partner with AMC in offering audiences a chance to see a classic romantic comedy on Valentine’s weekend.”
*Showings will be at 7 p.m. local time on Sunday, Feb. 13 and Monday, Feb. 14. Tickets for this limited-time, special event and a list of participating markets and theaters are now available online at www.AMCTheatres.com/sixteencandles or at participating theatres.
