Good Times
Who remembers that show? I love it, I just wish they'd put it on at a better time when I'm actually able to catch it. Also, do you prefer the earlier seasons when James was around, or the later seasons when Penny (Janet Jackson) moved in with Willona?

I remember the show it was (unofficially) spun off from, Maude, and the show that was spun off from, All In the Family. To answer the question, I prefer the earlier episodes with James Evans, Sr. (John Amos). One of the shows creators was Mike Evans, Lionel Jefferson from The Jeffersons (that was a spin off from All In the Family). Nothing against Ms. Jackson (I'm nasty), but when a show has to bring on young actors because the original young ones have gotten too old, it's usually time to pack it in.

Re: Good Times
I liked the beginning episodes but I preferred it after they killed James off and brought Penny in...one thing I have noticed, the show got a lot...quieter, after James left, and for me that was a relief because I grew up in a house where there was always yelling and even though James may have been in the right for losing his temper a lot, it's something I can do without.

And just what was so bad about My Wife and Kids? Middle class black parents raising their kids in the surburbs. I thought the writing on that show was very cleverly written.

Re: Good Times
Maybe but when did it become a rule that all sitcoms have to have kids with -12 IQs and parents who don't know one thing about them? To say nothing of the wife, if people have complaints about Clair Huxtable, Janet Kyle is Sybil, Norma Bates, Carrie, and demon possessed Reagan all in one.

Re: Good Times
I didn't like James when I was a kid, because I thought he was mean and negative. The older I got, though, the more it became apparent to me that the episodes with him were better; *much* more organized and real. The show became disorganized, and somewhat of a cartoon, after he was killed off. They brought on Carl, Penny and Keith. Esther Roll kept leaving and coming back; JJ got thrust into the role of quasi-father figure, with Willona taking on the role of mother in Florida's absence. It just went off track.

Re: Good Times
It was really weird how they had Florida marry that guy Carl, then she was away, supposedly on her honeymoon, but then she came back without him and it was like he never existed, but that was fine with me because I never liked Carl. But also of all the new changes they made, Keith I could've done without too, he was VERY annoying and about the only good quality to him was in that episode with the deaf boy who almost fell down the elevator shaft and Keith saved him, but other than that,
Of course something probably all of us have wondered, I know I certainly have, WHAT if they had brought Penny around while James was still alive? Can you imagine what he would've done to her mother when they found out she was beating on her and burning her with a hot iron?

For some reason the actor who played Keith reminds me of Sinbad.

Re: Good Times
A couple of things I never got, in the Stomach Mumps episode Florida starts to tell Penny that her friend Tina is pregnant. But she doesn't say Tina is, she says Tina has, and Willona cuts her off with stomach mumps, but what was Florida trying to say? Has what?
And then in the Matter of Mothers episode when Penny's birth mother comes back, Florida asks Willona who she is and upon finding out says 'but...I thought', and then she's escorted out by the police, again, what was it she was trying to say? Thought what about Lenella Gordon?

Yes, I remember it well. I, too, preferred it with John Amos. Loved it when J.J. and his sister bickered all the time.

"Aint we lucky we got'em----GOOD TIMES!"
great show. i too was sort of "afraid" of james, for lackign a better term. Watching at an older age, I realize this man's frustration to try to raise his family in a ghetto, and bring up respectable human beings. He was also a proud man who I think would rather have had his wife stay at home and not work. When she was working she was doing a "man's job" and he was not the provider in the family.

One of my favorite episodes (and I'm going by memory) is when JJ got shot by someone in a gang (Mad Dog?) and James is out for blood. He keeps breaking pretzel sticks like they were his fingers.

That was the second episode I ever saw (that was part 2) I like the discussion he had with Florida about it:
Florida: Vengeance is mine sayeth the Lord.
James: Well baby, all I want to do is the Lord's work!

Yeah that was one of my favorite episodes too. Especially at the end when his mother said she hated him and disowned him right there in the courtroom.

I watch when I can, I haven't seen that many episodes. Of course I remember the later years with Janet better. What sticks out to me the most is the "smoking incident" episode.

Must be about the 200th rendition of Rashoma done since the original movie.
Now it seems to me that after the first episodes with Penny, the ones that were really vital with her were Stomach Mumps, and A Matter of Mothers:
Now what I find interesting is in Penny's Christmas when she gets arrested for shoplifting, the social worker has doubts about letting Willona adopt her. At the Christmas party the social worker gets drunk on the eggnog and Willona threatens that she's tape recording her whole drunken stupor and will play it if she can't get Penny. Now she was faking it there, but in A Matter of Mothers she does just that, she DOES get recorded on tape, Penny's mother revealing her framing Willona to get Penny back, even though at the time she didn't know it was happening. But how's that for irony?
