Movies that make you cry Empty Movies that make you cry

Post by Supernova Fri Feb 11, 2011 2:29 pm

Not necessarily asking for a list, but what are your thoughts on them?

I was surprised a couple years back when I heard somebody on, I think it was TCM, saying if the story of a movie makes people cry, then they know the story's good, that it can move them like that, that it stirs their emotions like that...that's not the attitude in my family, in my family the idea is if a movie makes you cry, it's depressing and stop watching it and don't watch it again and you like depressing things if you do watch it. You can tell we wouldn't be very good in Hollywood...but I'll tell you, I've had some of my best movie experiences with films that eventually had me bawling like a baby.

Just like a comedy movie when things are funny you laugh, horror movies when its spooky you cringe, if its a tear jerker you cry. Its supposed to be an experience whatever movie you are watching, what fun is it if the movie is dull and boring and you feel no kind of emotion other than you can't wait for it to be over! SN since you are into the old classics here are a few that had me crying like a baby:

    Madame X
    Backstreet
    Imitation of life

Imitation of Life gets to me too. The ending was just all around sad.

Not the whole movie but certain scenes.

Door To Door (made for TV)

Babe - I can't help it. At the end when everyone is laughing at Farmer Hoggett and Babe and the little pig turns them all speechless. Gets me every time.

Toy Story 3 - When they all join hands as they face the end and at the end when Woody and andy have to part after many happy years together.

Apollo 13 - The scene where Marilyn Lovell has to tell Jim's mother, Blanche that there's been an accident and her younger daughter starts to cry. Blanche looks at her and says calm as can be, "Are you scared? Well don't you worry. If they could get a washing machine to fly, my Jimmy could land it."

There are so many movies that make me cry! But I think that's a good thing and that it speaks well for the movie that you're watching - it must truly be a good movie if it can touch your soul like that.

    Movies that make me cry:

"The Pride of the Yankees" - Gary Cooper plays Lou Gehrig, the baseball player who developed a nerve disease. Cooper's speech at the end, oh my God, sob city!

"Titanic" - The 1997 version. Enough said.

"From Here to Eternity" - Not the whole movie, but when Prew was talking about how he and his friend were in the gym boxing, and he caused him to go blind.

"Come Back, Little Sheba" - Both Burt Lancaster's and Shirley Booth's performances were heartbreaking. They played a married couple torn by Doc's (Lancaster) emotional distance and alcoholism.

"The Man with the Golden Arm" - This stars my dear Mr. Sinatra and it focuses around Frankie Machine's addiction to drugs, his aspirations for a new career as a drummer and the tear he feels between his crippled wife and his mistress.

Steel Magnolias at Shelby's funeral when Sally Fields has her breakdown

The Rock - i know this sounds nuts for an action movie, but when Reese from the terminator and the rest of the Navy Seals come out of the sewer into the shower room only to find they are trapped by the Marines i cry every time. Ed Harris screams "give the order to stand down" Reese "I will not give that order" and they go back and forth until an accident sets off a slaughter scene. I think this is one of the best orchestrated scenes that I can think of.
