Parents too well off for FAFSA. Empty Parents too well off for FAFSA.

A friend of mine's daughter is registering for the spring/summer semester. He and his wife are average wage earners, but because they have always been diligent about paying off debt, their daughter is penalized by FAFSA. She qualifies for nothing, yet her parents really don't have the funds to help.

Anyone else in the same predicament, where parents aren't wealthy enough to afford tuition for their college student, but not poor enough to qualify for aid?

A type of federal financial aid. It stands for "Free Application for Federal Student Aid".

I was sort of that same situation when I applied for FAFSA as a high school senior. My situation wasn't too bad because my dad at the time got a promotion in his job and end making more money and in the state I live in they have a lottery scholarship program for people who attend state colleges immediately after high school graduations.

I have had relatives in different states who have encountered not qualifigying for FAFSA, usually they do their best to find scholarships or the kids sometimes attend a community college for a couple of years.

When I was in school, I didn't live with my parents, but they still wanted to use their income because of my age when I applied for financial aid. They wanted my parents to get student loans for me. It was SUCH a pain to get my parents to agree to do the application because they didn't have any money. Finally they did it and they were denied. So they treated me as an independent person and I was able to apply on my own. I had student loan debt at a very young age that way, but it was my schooling anyway and parent's aren't necessarily obligated to pay for their children's schooling. They say you should save for retirement first because kids can get loans for school but you can't get a loan for retirement.

I wonder if your friend could get student loans on her own like I did?
