ABC has canceled two of its longest-running programs, daytime soap operas "All My Children" and "One Life to Live."
The network announced Thursday that the two soap operas would end, with "All My Children" going off the air in September and "One Life to Live" going off the air in January.
In their place, a Mario Batali-hosted food show called "The Chew" will premiere in September, and a health/lifestyle transformation show tentatively called "The Revolution" will premiere in January.
"General Hospital" will remain on the network.

I saw. I haven't watched them in years, but in my teens and early 20's, I was the most devoted fan of the ABC soaps, especially GH and OLTL. I saw Tommy Lee Jones, Laurence Fishburne, Tom Berenger, on their first days.
There were always soaps. What happened?

You were lucky to have been a viewer during those years, with those actors, as many consider it to be the golden era of the show. Unfortunately, ABC didn't make it a habit to save episodes from AMC and OLTL's first decade, so much of the late 1960s and 1970s no longer exists on video.
What happened? The networks have, sadly, decided to let them die; because they would rather sink money into cheap reality and talk shows, rather than continue the serial tradition.

Sucks. Bye Bye ABC Daytime.
Chris: Should we work together to complete the labyrinth? With the show concluding, we can write "Notoriously Remembered" pages for the biggest characters still on the show when it goes down.

Absolutely. The biggest problem with the Labyrinth was always that the storylines continued and that I couldn't keep up with everything all the time. It was always 'in progress.' Now that it's ending, hopefully I can complete the site.

Well I'll be glad to help with the recent stuff. I hope you don't mind some reasonable suggestions for "Notoriously Remembered."

That statement from Frons was so pompous and insincere. No one wants to see a "cooking" and "lifestyle transformation" show. I hope reruns of House and Jag on USA, and all those syndicated court shows, murders your new shows. What buffoons they are at ABC.

Well, I'll wait until the time comes. Just so I know how hard I gotta push. It shouldn't be too many. I'm sure you already got the most obvious (Viki, Dorian, Todd, Blair, etc.) a spot. I just need to make my pitches for the others. (It shouldn't be too hard to guess. I'll make my case when the time comes. )Chris wrote:Forgiveness Man wrote:

Re: OLTL and AMC cancelled
It had to happen some time. Let us be real for a minute: this show has been besieged by cancellation rumors, speculation and innuendo for the last fifteen years, but managed to get continually reprieved (and more than once it seemed like it only narrowly escaped the ax by the skin of its teeth) - despite how it could have been realistically canceled a decade ago.
Do we really need to see a fifty year old, balding Todd meddling in thirty year old Starr and Dani's sex lives; a post menopausal Blair continuing to believe that she is a hot number in a red dress; a middle aged/two hundred pound Natalie clamor for a rickety old emotionally aloof John; eighty year old Viki and Dorian alternate being mortal enemies this week and BFF's the next...all while the 150 year old ghost of Victor Lord still haunts the basement of Llanfair?
It truly is the end of a long, indelible era of television, and I will be sad to see the show go...but based more on its history, and what used to be, rather than any future potential it had.

Re: OLTL and AMC cancelled
I'm going to miss OLTL like crazy. I've been watching since 1973. I'm just going to keep enjoying the show until the end, then it will be one less hour to record. I won't be watching anything on daytime TV anymore (I'm not home during the day anyway)but I may still record The View, it depends. Brian Frons is a complete fuckface has no clue. I hope the new crap that he puts on fails miserably.

Re: OLTL and AMC cancelled
Are you kidding me, new shows on food and health? I can agree that the soaps have gotten stale over the years and could have used a reboot, but health and food shows put me to sleep. I can't think of any that I watch. We are being bombarded with shows to make us healthier and some people just like to have a little fantasy shows ie soaps, dramas. Bad choice ABC I see this as your journey to last place in the dying network channels. Fronshole wouldn't know what the daytime viewing audience wanted if it bit him on his moronic backside.

Re: OLTL and AMC cancelled
The idea of health TV shows kind of sound a tad oxymoronic. They always yammer on about how we gotta spend LESS time in front of the television. So WHY then, should I be watching their program?

Re: OLTL and AMC cancelled
I heard about the cancellation of OLTL and AMC yesterday on the news. That is a shame. I used to be a big watcher of all three ABC soaps (but my schedule diverted my attention away from AMC and OLTL. I kept on watching GH for a time, but eventually I fell out of sorts with that one as well.) My grandma still watches OLTL faithfully. This is going to bother her, as she's watched that show from its inception. I don't think some people understand the impact that this will have to the many daytime viewers. There are millions of people who faithfully watch their stories and have a connection to their characters and history. Generations of people that have wrapped into these soaps for the last 40+ years, and these new cooking and lifestyle shows will not gain the same following or devotion. They will probably not last for longer than two or three seasons, even if they are mildly successful.
This is a real sad thing ABC…

I don't need to boycott. lol I just have no interest in the shows. Boycotting, to me, suggests that I'm doing some kind of sacrifice to make a point. I'm not. I am merely not going to watch something just because it is on.

IMO All My Children and General Hospital should be the ones to close down and One Life To Live is the soap that should remain on the air. I can't beleive they are going to keep the mob infested soap on. I guarantee, it won't be on long either and I give it one year after the other two closes. OLTL is far better than those other two.

Re: OLTL and AMC cancelled
You're right, GH should be cancelled–if only because it's more expensive to produce, they are consistently over budget and the ratings aren't significantly greater than the others. OLTL was their most cost effective show. It was always under budget, and probably made them the most money; but of course they're going to favor keeping the show James Franco guest stars on the air over it.
Honestly, I think OLTL was a casualty of public relations. From a financial standpoint, it probably made the most sense to cancel All My Children, but I can't help but think that the suits at ABCD probably didn't want to justify why the soap with Erica Kane went, while OLTL remained on the air (even if it does do better.)
