Who else thinks this is a bad idea?

Nick and Nora are 1930s and 40s film material, leave them there! Nobody is going to be able to top William Powell and Myrna Loy in those roles, not even Johnny Depp who is not that great of an actor, just a convenient one I find.

Not everyone watches antique movies from the '30s and '40s, so they will have no reference to the previous The Thin Man.

All I know of is Peter Lawford from the TV series, which is already irrelevant to a modern making of this movie.

All I hope for is that it is a totally modern story with nothing but the title being old, or they make it a legitimate period piece based in the '30s.

(That was my main fault with Eyes Wide Shut is that they took a 1920s era story and put it in a current setting. No sophisticated, sane modern man goes all batshit because his wife has FANATASIES about boning another guy. Maybe in 1926 Austria it was an issue but not modern NY City.)

I think it's a great idea and I'm looking forward to it. I also disagree about Johnny Depp. The man isn't afraid to tackle any role and do it well.

That's one opinion, mine is he's become a franchise, people know his name is going to draw people to see the movie regardless of if he does the role well or not, but I seriously doubt he's got anything that can compare with William Powell's take on Nick Charles, and I dread to think who they'll get in for Nora.

When I first read about this elsewhere that's the "assumption" I made. If it winds up being "updated" with car chases and explosions I probably won't bother.

BYW. The Thin Man wasn't a reference to Nick Charles. Just like the Pink Panther wasn't a reference to Inspector Clouseau.

Not in the first movie no, but that became the franchise, the name stuck even without him and just the detective couple.

I don't like it when they remake classic movies - and I don't even like "The Thin Man"! (Although their little dog was cute.) But still, I think they should let classic movies rest in peace and do what they do best which is making Nicolas Cage action movies that nobody ever remembers.

Oh yes, Asta, or was it Astor? I think Asta, cute little Asta, he was such a talented dog, I think he was the best part of the movies.

And I have to agree, do you see a remake of Gone with the Wind coming up? No you don't! Citizen Kane? Casablanca? Duck Soup? No, but they're planning to remake Topper and put Steve Martin in it! What the hell? The movie was just fun enough to see with Cary Grant (the sequels were better, especially the murder mystery Topper Returns with Rochester), but we don't want to see balding white headed Steve Martin in either role as Cosmo Topper or George Kirby.

I agree. He's not on my list of favorites but Depp has come a long way from 21 Jump Street.
