We NEVER had helmets, and what do you know, we may have fallen down a few times, but never sustained any head injuries, skinned elbows, scraped hands, a scraped ankle that bled for the longest time and the largest amount I had ever seen at 8 years old, sure, but never hit my head, AND we rode on the cement.

I always wear a helmet. I have several friends who would not be here today or would have serious brain damage had they not been wearing their helmets while bike riding. Back in high school, there were a schoolmate who died due to not wearing helmets. That was before there was an awareness of the importance of helmets. He was a few years older than me, so I didn't know him, but I knew of him and couldn't ride past the place he died without thinking of him. Family friends lost their daughter in a skiing accident when she was just 8 years old, a year younger than me. Had she been wearing a helmet, she'd be alive today.
Another friend of mine called anyone without a helmet a statistic. Where I live, it's the law, and I don't intend to break the law or risk getting a fine , nor do I want to put myself at risk for head injuries.

Never wore a helmet on my bike as a kid either. Ironically enough, I did wear one when I would go in-line skating.

I never wore helmets for either. Honestly, when I was growing up, I can't remember anyone who did.

Growing up it wasn't even thot about. Now here in Florida kids are required to wear helmets on bikes but adults not.
The one time I was hit by a car, I went over the hood and took out the drivers side windshield with my bare, bald head. Nice little round imprint where the driver thot I was coming into her car. (probably the only reason it was not a hit and run, which is the norm in Miami - she couldn't see.
Now, had I been wearing a helmet, like Christopher Reeve, it is possible that the dispersed energy could have broken my neck. I was lucky to get away with six stitches in my scalp.

Seriously. Concrete. Asphalt. We rode on the handlebars. Downhill.
And no. Never wore one.

I never wore a helmet when I rode my bike or skated. Especially as a child in the summer, I just slipped on my flip-flops and hopped on my bike, I didn't hassle with helmets or anything.
