It's what some ppl do, nasty as it is. It used to be worse in the tobacco chewing days but at least you could see where they spit. In India there is a similar problem with the Betel nut chewers who spit a reddish nastiness all over the place.

Yes, I'm put off by it. It's a gross and impolite thing to do. When I was in grade school I had a girlfriend who did that and I always cringed when she did it.

I don't do it in front of people but sometimes when I'm out for my walk (and there's no one else out anyway) something finds it's way from my nasal passages. And as we've already establised, i'm a spitter - not a swallower. LOL, there's a scene in Raging Bull where they're in a hotel suite before his first crack at the title and De Niro hocks one right on the floor.

It is gross. If someone's going to spit on the ground, they should do it when not a lot of people are around to see and try to aim for an obscure place, like the grass.
