I heard on TV last night that at one point there was an "assassination attempt" on Johnny Carson. Why wasn't it referred to as "attempted murder"....what's the difference?

I would define "assassination" as the murder of a public/prominent person.

I think assassination is more political.

    co-signs

I don't know why they said "assassinate" when it came to Johnny Carson. A murder attempt, sure, but not assassination - I always connect that term with someone in politics.

Yeah - I think politics, too - someone in a position of power - royalty, politicians, and so forth.
