Jessica's amnesia story would have worked so much better if instead of having her safely retreat fifteen years in the past, they would have rather had her battle to remember. Or perhaps when told of Jessica's previous trials and tribulations, she becomes so disgusted by the hard luck stories that she rejects trying to recall her previous self -- in a bid to be stronger, and no longer a victim. Then when her memory ultimately returned, she still retained a bit of her growing assertiveness.
They could have taken so many routes with this cliche story. It could have been used as a vehicle to empower the character, for once. That they wasted it on trying to pull off a live action rerun is just lousy.
