| Can you remember the first time you had a place of your own? What did it look like? Was it nice or a bit shabby? | |

| The first place I shared with my brother and a friend of his. They were barely housebroken. Overall though the apartments weren't that great to begin with. | |

| It was a pretty decent apartment complex. Nothing overly fancy, but did have amenities such as indoor/outdoor pool, game room and was in a decent neighborhood. | |

| My first place in New Orleans (1967) was a one room apt. carved out of an old three story bldg. (since turned into a parking lot).
It had a wet plaster ceiling in the kitchen that eventually caved in and the large bed had bedbugs.
The most fascinating thing was a water heater from the 19th Century - had a copper coil pipe that wound around with a tubular burner under it - no tank. The water heated as it went thru the pipe and the gas came on by a valve that detected decrease in water pressure when you turned on the hot water. Oh, I opened the door once to see if it was burning and some collected gas blew a not-too-hot blue flame in my face. To use the young male vernacular when something like that happens, "I'm Good!"
Oh, it had a little balcony that overlooked a magnolia tree and a parking lot that used to be another old run down bldg.
Since then, I have lived in better and I have lived in worse. | |

| My first apartment looked "decent" enough on the outside, but was actually in an area that wasn't that great. There were worst places to be, but you could see the area running down. On the inside, it was just a small one bedroom place, with a dual entrance way to the kitchen that I liked. The hallway was cramped with my bedroom and the bathroom a little too close together. | |

| First place I ever had is the one that I have now. It's nice. Roomy. No bugs. Nice neighborhood. Nice sized yard for when I want to throw parties or a barbecue. I did good. | |

| WHEN I wasn't in res on campus? it was okay - tiny. It was a bedroom in a townhouse and it belonged to the Dad of two of the girls. They rented out two rooms. It wasn't a great set-up 'cause the girls would always have gatherings in the kitchen and rarely invite my roomie or I. It was like we were in the way if we were trying to cook. It got to be a pattern at least once a week we'd walk to McDonald's'cause it just wasn't comfortable trying to cok around them. | |
