Are you leery of home-renters/leasers? Empty Are you leery of home-renters/leasers?

My next door neighbor moved about two years ago, but didn't sell her house; she opted to rent it out. Since then about three sets of people have moved in and out. The people who lived there most recently just left, and I'm glad, because they were discourteous. The type that would walk on your grass, or stand on the edge of your driveway talking to a bunch of people.

Some new people have been subtly moving in, so we'll see how they work out.

I recall Red talking about how she leases her home–and of course I'm not trying to paint her with this brush–but in general are you more leery of people who move into a rented house? The cliche is that people who rent/lease tend to not make good neighbors. If you've had any neighbors who you were renting, have you noticed this to be true?

It can go both ways. Sometimes the owners are not much of a prize either. The house next to me has been vacant for over a year & people parade in & out of it almost every day. I'm dreading when it is finally rented because I've been enjoying the peace & quiet. I figure whoever finally moves in is someone I'm gonna be stuck with for at least a year.

Thanks Chris, for not calling me rental trash! Just giving you a hard time.

I think the answer to your question totally depends on the area. Where I live there are not that many stand alone homes for rent, so while there might be a high turn over for the unit, the lessees would mostly be quality individuals. Owners of stand alone homes for rent can be picky on who they lease to because they are in high demand.

Duplexes are a completely different story. In my particular neighborhood, these very nice duplexes are intermixed with very nice homes. Ten years ago, this neighborhood was second best in the city for people to seek duplexes. What happened is that some owners found themselves forced to take rental assistance to keep their units full. Now there are families that come and go in some of these duplexes that are less than ideal neighbors.

We've lived in the same apartment since 1987 and have had numerous neighbors over the years. Some were nice and some not so nice. If you rent, it's a lot easier to pull up stakes and get out of Dodge if you become surrounded by bad neighbors then if you own your home.

Well, the folks that moved in next door to me are renters I think. Eh, I MUCH prefer it when nobody was living next to me but I take solace in the fact if those niggas never pay their rent, they'll have to get out. Not that I have any major problems with them....they speak when they see me and whatnot.....but I know they do shit that I just can't get with.

ITA that it can go both ways. Where I live, most people have to rent 'cause the cost of living is so high. I've heard horror stories of renters but also of landlords.

It all depends on the area and personality of the owner. Some home owners who rent out their place are money hogs, who will let anyone in who can pay a deposit along with first and last months rent.

And then become pissed when their property is left in ruins. I've known a few like that. Didn't feel sorry for them in the least.

LOL, oh....I knew someone like him. Tenants have more rights than the landlords. In this city, renting to someone is a big risk. But if you're willing to do it legally....you can get them out. That guy, however, needs his face, name and social security number put up on a list and given to every landlord in the country.

Wow...I didn't even read the whole thing, but didn't have to, to see what a loser this guy is. I can't believe his method of keeping a roof over his head.

Of the people I know that have rentals, every single one has horror stories. The worst being our friend Mark, who had to take multiple actions to get certain people out of a single family dwelling. They literally had a room in that place set aside for the dog to shit. He showed us photos taken a few days after he got them out. Rotting food all over the kitchen, fast food wrappers all over the whole place...I don't know how they lived there like that without health problems.
