http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2011/jun/17/school-ban-cornrows-indirect-discrimination

Just to summarize the article, an eleven year old black boy in London was sent home from school because his hair was braided in cornrows; it apparently violated the schools strict uniform code – 'designed to deter gang culture and create a safe environment for all its pupils.' The issue went to court, and it was declared discriminatory. The schools defense was that this rule didn't apply to just the black kids, but to everyone. The retort to that, though, was that this particular hairstyle is more culturally relevant to the black community, and so white kids not being allowed to wear braids doesn't have the same significance.

Anyway, what do you think? Should schools be allowed to restrict certain hairstyles, even if it's a style that is culturally relevant to a certain group of students?

Corn rows are only worn by gang members? Since when?

No. And that was extremely racist and stupid on the school's part. Wonder what they would've done with him if he wore dreads.

I didn't know corn rows were part of being a gang. Sounds discriminatory to me!
