Fireworks and kids. Empty
PostSubject: Fireworks and kids.   Fireworks and kids. EmptyFri Jul 01, 2011 5:14 pm

This is a spin off of Supernova's thread.

Fireworks used to be essential when I was a kid around the 4th. Me and cousins would spend weeks collecting them from the party stores and gas stations. Our parents were never that comfortable with us lighting them but knew we were doing it. A few times I had some pop in my hands.

It's been more than 20 years since I last did this. I don't know if kids are still big on fire crackers like we were back in the 80's, or if stores still casually sell them to kids like they did back then. I don't remember there being any restrictions. When I was under 10, I was buying them with no problem. When you were a kid, do you buy and light fire crackers on your own? Do you think stores should be selling fire works to kids?

Oh yeah. Some teens could get hold of Cherry Bombs, big enuf to take out a public school toilet. (How do I know this? Blue Cool )

I had some of the small ones go off in my fingers. Those cheap wicks are tricky - you think it is out but then BANG!!

They were dangerous and some kids lost fingers & eyes with the bigger ones, so wisely they restricted them. We didn't just do firecrackers for the noise. We wanted to see what they could do. Tin cans were our rockets.

There needs to be some age restrictions.

Yeah, I bought firecrackers when I was a kid. But this was when I was down south. I think the restrictions were pretty lenient then down there. I think the parents should buy firecrackers instead of the children though.

Believe me, they're still VERY big on firecrackers, that's all some people buy, about ten million firecrackers, why I don't know. As a kid my father always took us, but still my brother and I knew what we were doing and we lit most of them.

Yeah I remember buying Jumping Jacks and snakes from the corner store when I was a little kid.

We used to stick them in trees and light them.

I never heard of that one, we just light them and toss them on the sidewalk.

When I was a kid, I was big time into local firecrackers. And to echo what's been said already, I never had a problem buying them from the store either. They readily sold them to kids (because for the most part that's who they were pandered to.) In retrospect, though, no I don't think they should be selling fireworks to children.

Me and my cousin used to put those in our other cousins window at night and light 'em up. They were already scaredy cats. It was fun watching them through the window every time we lit one up.

They were made illegal where I live after several serious injuries and near deaths - young people being stupid. The city does a huge fireworks display for Canada Day and for a few other occasions and there's one place that does them each week on Saturdays but other than that, fireworks and firecrakers and all that stuff are illegal. I think there are stores in Chinatown that deal with them behind the counter, though, but if you're caught with them you can be charged - selling or in posession.
