Ditto me. I love those bloody, psychological thriller type movies, where the crazy villain can be shot five times and not die, because they're just that set on trying to kill their target. I don't know how much I like those monster/slasher movies though, they make me squeamish.

Stuff that makes your imagination run rampant is far more unnerving sometimes, than the blood and guts.

I like many kinds" of movies, with slasher types included. Love the "Saw" series (the first is still the best), and I really liked "The Hostel". But I'll admit, the Freddie Krueger movies seem silly to me now.

My mother likes the old horror movies, like from the 50s, but she can't take anything that's violent or gory because she has the kind of mind that she'll see that, go to sleep and automatically have nightmares about it. I haven't had that problem since I was a kid although I've had a few nightmares in the last couple of days that the recent things I'd seen played a major role. But I can't imagine that, and I don't get it either because like she can't watch Night of the Living Dead (1968) but she watched Sopranos and Oz and all the HBO shows that were very graphic, that's okay but like, she would never be able to get through Nightmare on Elm Street because it's too gory.

I remember watching "The Exorcist" when I was 12, and not being able to sleep that night--I was so scared, I slept on the floor of my parents' bedroom!

(though looking back, why my parents ever let a 12 year old watch that movie, is beyond me!)

By and large, I'm not a fan. There are some (albeit very few) horror movies I like, but I'm with everyone who says they prefer the angst-ridden thrillers more.

I agree. I love slasher films, having grown up during the 70/80s height of them. I know a schizophrenic that believed Tyra Banks was talking to her through the TV screen telling her to kill me for being a witch. Sad but true, so crazy people can blame anything.

That thread on The Babysitter and the Man Upstairs is scarier than most (if not all) violent gore flicks.

Carrie, Misery, Ringu, Pornography, Stepford Wives

All scarier than any gore movie I've ever seen.

Not a fan of slasher/horror movies. I'm a scaredy cat when it comes to those kinds of movies.

I was so disappointed when I saw that movie, I had heard how scary it was, that it was the scariest movie made, and I was 14 at the time, I got it from the video store, my parents had NO clue, I sneaked it in and watched it in my room...and I felt very let down, there was never a moment where I was scared by any of it. Even though they're both very similar, I got more entertainment from the book than the movie. I found it to be highly overrated.

yeah but what year did you watch it? when it first came out there weren't any other movies like it. People were literally getting sick and fainting in the theaters after waiting hours in line. Even the big horror movie before it was Rosemary's Baby-- which never really shows anything, it is more psychologically scary. The idea of her head turning was state-of-the-art special effects for its day. Texas Chainsaw was scary but didnt come out until after it too. Even the original nightmare on elm street was really scary when it first came out. But movies have to top eachother to be original, so there will always be something more disgusting or shocking later.

Exactly. Everything has to be kept in context. When The Exorcist first hit theaters people were being literally carried out. There hadn't been anything quite like it before. I remember people screaming. One girl ran out. I agree about the original Nightmare. It freaked me out at the time but now seems fairly tame. The effects in Jaws were outstanding at the time but things have come a long way. So it's all context & remembering the time it was made.

I love and hate them at the same time. If I can get somebody to see it with me I will watch a slasher horror film, but never alone.

It is also a sign of the times. The original movie came out in the 70's and for that time period it was considered a very violent movie. By the time I got to see it in the 80's I was still shook up with the scene where he degraded the girls and then stabbed that one girl. It was such a disturbing scene I had it in my head for days.

I haven't seen that particular movie, but some of the ones from back in the 70's are downright creepy. Ever see "Let's Scare Jessica To Death" ? That one was a psychological thriller where you had to figure out if the main character was going insane and having a breakdown, or if there really were vampires/zombies after her.

HG I am thinking I did see this movie once, the part where they are sitting at the table (seance??) looks familiar to me. Its on my list now of movies to buy, I want to see it.

The Hostel movies were pretty brutal, just the concept of it makes me shake! I am hoping for Hostel 3!!!!

I agree the Saw movies were the best too.

I almost forgot about this thread--I actually found that movie on the list in the library circuit, right after I posted about it, so I put my name in for it, and will watch it again when it comes in! LOL

I think part of it is, and no offense here, but you were born the year I graduated from college, and I've found that the younger generation is more desensitized to violence than kids were in my own generation. "The Exorcist" for it's time period, was horrifying, as was "The Stepford Wives", and movie topics that were unheard of or pushed the limits, then, are what are standard now.

Myself being 12 years old in 1979, had a far different reaction than I probably would have in 2003 or so when you were similar age and saw the same film. It's all in being a product of what your generation is exposed to, growing up.
