Bad News by Donald E. Westlake Empty Bad News by Donald E. Westlake

If you're familiar with the Dortmunder comedy crime series, or even if you're not, this is one funny as hell book, I highly recommend it to anybody who enjoys a good laugh. There's a long story to my own discovery of it; I found out about the movie Why Me? with Christopher Lambert and Christopher Lloyd, because I liked Lambert in Highlander and wanted to see what other stuff he's done, and this movie was an easy find. And it's good, it's not a cinematic masterpiece but it is funny, two bumbling crooks steal a bunch of jewels not knowing they got a cursed ruby ring in the batch, and soon have the cops, the FBI, the entire Turkish embassy, one very confused woman, and their own fellow crooks chasing after them trying to get it back.

Now I'm the kind of person that if I like a movie, if it's based on a book, I want to read the original book, so I found out it was based on a book also called Why Me?, only in the original story, the character that in the movie was called Gus Cardinal, is actually John Dortmunder, and by the way does ANYBODY have any idea what the hell kind of a name Dortmunder is anyway?

Anyway, book and movie are about as different as day and night, but both are very funny in different regards. Now, I found Bad News on the shelf for the rotating book service, meaning these books stay a few weeks and then get taken to other libraries. I have never read another book by Donald E. Westlake since Why Me?, but I remembered the name and thought it might be another Dortmunder story, and when I saw it was I snatched it up.

Funny as hell, that's about the best way I can describe it. It's far funnier than Why Me? was and I didn't think that was possible. As it turns out there are 14 novels with John Dortmunder, apparently THE unluckiest thief in the whole world, thanks in part to the rotten luck he has with partners. This time the thief who starts out trying to lift $1000 worth of cameras winds up digging up a grave and switching coffins as part of an inheritance fraud for an Indian woman looking to cash in on the profits of a casino with a strict 'tribe members only' sort of policy. And from there things only get worse, harder, and more confusing, and so far I'm loving it.
