Cars: stick shift or automatic? Empty Cars: stick shift or automatic?

Do you know how to drive a car that has a manual (stick shift) transmission?
If you do, which do you prefer: a stick shift or an automatic?

Manual transmission. I've never owned an automatic and have rarely driven them.

Automatic is my choice. I have not driven a stick in about 10 years. It would be fun to see if I could do it well right away or not.

I can drive a stick shift but haven't in a while since I don't have a car and everyone's car I drive is auto.

As for doing it well, many old cars and trucks with stick, you have to learn individually where the clutch engages or you will stall it. You get to feel the engine and moving parts with manual.

Now tractors are fun. You not only have the gears and clutch but rear wheel control to make sharp turns.

I can drive both but my preference for a while now has been automatic for the convenience. After I made the switch, it took a while for me to stop reaching for the gear shift.

I grew up with stick shifts. Remember the stick shift on the column? How about the car(I think it was Dodge)that had push buttons on the dash for their automatic transmission? Now, I prefer automatics, especially in city driving and on ice. Six and seven speed automatics are on the market now, even an eight speed. Should be very smooth an efficient. Then there are the small cars with a Continuously Variable Transmissions(CVT)that have no shifts at all.

I learned on a stick and always preferred and bought sticks, until 2006. Now I love my automatic.
