Do you think that private religious schools have the right to discriminate in who they hire/fire (teachers) and enroll/expel (students) based on religion, sexual orientation, or anything that conflicts with their religions teachings? When this happens, should the person on the receiving end fight for their right to be there, or just seek out another school that is less stringent in their ethics codes?

Private groups, such as religions and BSA have a right to discriminate as long as they don't receive any of MY money, meaning any support from my gay-nonreligious taxes or use of the publicly supported facilities such as fire/police stations. If they are truly private then they should make it on their own without any public support.

Discrimination is discrimination all the same whether in a private school or not. Just because of the person's race, sexual preference, if their parents attended in the past and all the other reasons is just plain discrimination. Doesn't matter if they get money from the public, student's parents or gov't, it's still discrimination. I thought our country had conquered the issue of discrimination but yet it still exsists. Discrimiation in certain circumstances or to fit their lifestyle is still wrong. No matter which way you write it.

Private institutions have a right to hire/fire whoever they want and do business with whoever they want. That said, it's probably not WISE to hire/fire based on such things alone. If somebody who is gay (or whose kid is gay) or of a different religion trusts this school to educate their kids and doesn't expect them to change their curriculum so said kid isn't offended, and is willing to pay regardless, I say let them. The more the merrier. big grin

Yeah so long as theyre not accepting any public money, they can discriminate to their hearts content. But that doesn't mean those who they discriminate against can't make noise about their bigotry and sully their reputation to the point where their private investors and donators may not be comfortable supporting them more!
