I've only had the ambition to read Cannery Row and Sweet Thursday because they were the basis of the 1982 movie with Nick Nolte and Debra Winger. I wasn't disappointed. Anyone read any of his better known work like Grapes of Wrath and Of Mice and Men?

Re: John Steinbeck
I got about 140 pages into Grapes of Wrath and then I had to take it back, I plan to check it out again sometime and try to finish it. I also read East of Eden, that also took me 2 tries to get through the whole thing, that one I liked, I don't know why, but I liked it, but I think part of it is I kind of feel like I can relate to Cal, I know what it's like to be the sibling who never does anything right and have a 'perfect' brother.
