Does anybody else hate this? They leave their lawn to grow and grow and grow until you need either a machete or Tarzan to get through it, and it spreads to the sidewalks too so I've gotta walk the dogs through that, and it's always in the tall grass I come away with the most chigger bites on my legs. The people next door to my grandmother have their grass so high the big fat rat/Jack Russell terrier can just about disappear completely stepping into their yard. We only let ours get to the point of slightly unsightly, not a foot tall, before cutting it down again.

In my neighborhood its the opposite the people are obsessed with their grass to the point its scary. I have a gardener come once a week to cut the grass.

Where I live once it gets that high you get one notice to cut it within a few days. If it isn't done on that day, the city cuts it & sends you the bill.

We have something similar here too but I'm guessing the ordinance must be about 3 feet high or something because it's obscene how tall some people are allowed to let their grass get before it's cut. And it's especially the worst in the houses where nobody's living there, but doesn't the city have an obligation then to fulfill that ordinance?

Well, can't say that I like it, but I don't let it bother me. Lawn height does not a good neighbor make.

It doesn't affect me but I can see the point. If I was a home owner with a lawn, I would maintain it and would appreciate it if my neighbors did the same.

Re: People who don't mow their lawns
One family who used to live next to me consisted of the father being a real estate agent. He put the house on the market, and moved the whole family out before it was sold, thus leaving it empty and yes, the lawn growing like mad. I waited to see if he'd come back to mow it, but he didn't, so I went on the website of the agency he worked for and sent him a curt message to the effect that since he's a realtor, he should know that most of what sells a house is curbside appeal, and letting your property fall into disrepair and the lawn turn into a cow pasture, seems a bit of an oxymoron, considering his profession.
The lawn got mowed the next day, and I'm glad because my next step would have been to get a huge bottle of Round-Up weed killer and blast his whole yard with it and kill everything.

Re: People who don't mow their lawns
I know I personally wouldn't mow my own lawn. Somebody else is gonna do it for me....

I might have just written a few choice words. On the other hand, since it was cut the very next day that you complained, do you think it's possible he had arranged for it to be cut but someone else wasn't doing their job?

The guy was actually was out there himself, mowing the lawn the next day. I'm sure he knew it was me that complained though--he knew I didn't particularly care for him the whole time he and his family were living there. It was sort of a Brady Bunch but not married thing, then the father moved out with the girlfriend and her kids to another town, but left his own teenaged/college-aged sons living there by themselves for a while so they could finish out the school year.
This guy thought he, himself was God's gift to women, and raised his sons to be like that, and in leaving them unattended, they of course got into lots of teenage-trouble. I must've called the cops at least once a week to break up their parties, and they had a steady stream of girls in and out, and you could smell the pot before you even saw the bong-smoke.
The guy finally sold the house and took his kids with him, but he deserved every nasty-ass thing I said to him in that anonymous email. LOL
