I don't think so, that's the only way I can keep in contact with a friend of mine in Canada. I told her once if ours was a long distance telephone relationship, I'd keep her up all night because usually when I write her it's after midnight.

Of course it would cost more and be more lag time, but when I was a young man our version of world wide social networking was pen pals. I had several young women writing me from the UK when I was in the service stationed in Turkey, and we exchanged paper fotos sent thru the mail.
E-mail is fun, efficient and convenient, but I did live without it once. It is doable.

For personal use it would be very inconvenient to do so, and I can't imagine not having it for work, with as many emails I get per day.
