In this day in age, do you think teenage marriage is ever a good idea?

Also, what do you think of parents consenting to their sixteen and seventeen year olds requests/demands to marry -- fearing that if they don't that when the child turns eighteen, they'll elope and will disown them in the process?

Should parents ever give into that fear?

No and no. You shouldnt consent to marriage fearing they will elope. Let them make that decision as an adult. They ain't getting married under MY supervision.

There is no reason why any parent should placate their underage kids marrying....none. I don't care how big a potential rift not giving consent may create. They can wait until the law allows it.

I don't see why certain states are allowing 14 and 15 year olds to get married, with or without parental consent...this is not the Bronze Age, the average life span is in the late 70s it's not 30 anymore and you don't have to have 10 kids in order to have 2 or 3 survive to carry on the family name, so somebody tell me why a 14 year old in this day and age in our modern society would NEED to get married?
