Another NY town clerk is reportedly seeking a special exception regarding the duties of her job. The Citizen reports:

A town clerk in Cayuga County has informed her town board that because of her religious beliefs, she does not believe she can sign marriage licenses for same-sex couples, according to a member of the board.

Ledyard Town Clerk Rose Marie Belforti submitted a letter to the Ledyard Town Board saying that her religious beliefs prevented her from signing marriage licenses for same-sex couples and the board discussed Belforti’s letter at Monday’s meeting, according to John Binns, a member of the town board.

When reached for comment Thursday, Belforti said “that’s not your business” before hanging up the phone.

"Not your business"? Well actually, if a government employee is questioning a state law and her "right" to both ignore it and maintain that same taxpayer-funded employment, then yes -- it is every one's business. Every New Yorker's business, in particular.

But honestly, I don't think these things are going to get much more play. Polls consistently show New Yorkers in support of the marriage law, Americans basically undertstand the concept of church and state spearation, and most people quite fully understand that employment -- any employment -- comes with prescribed duties. New York's increasingly option-deprived opposition groups seized on this proposed martyrdom early and loudly because it seemed like a possibily playable card in tune with our times. They miscalculated.

That article shouldn't be throwing stones in regards to "special exceptions."

I think it's her right. If people try to force her to sign it, then they're just bigoted hypocrites. It's interesting to see how the preachers of tolerance have become the intolerant ones. Although not surprising at all to see.

I can imagine that there will be those who defend this woman because they feel her rights to her religious beliefs are somehow being violated. What if her personal views, religious or otherwise, were against people of different races or religions from marrying? Presuming of course that those unions are permitted by civil law. Just as same sex marriage is in the state where she refuses to uphold the law. She isn't clergy. She's a civil servant and only has the right to resign if she won't do her job. Whining about being intolerant of intolerance. Ludicrous.

Of course there will be and it's ridiculous. The thing is, her personal views should have nothing to do with signing the certificates. It's her damn job. If she doesn't want to do it, then see ya and don't let the door hit ya where the good Lord split ya. There are plenty of unemployed New Yorkers out there that would love to the job and would do it with pleasure.

Exactly! Can you imagine a cashier or salesperson refusing to help a customer because they "don't approve" of them for whatever reason? The company would show their ass the door. This is what should happen to her too.
