I think at least a couple are good. You need one for just general purpose to sign up for forums & that you don't mind the spammy mail that's inevitable. And one for non-internet stuff. I still have too many.

I have 7 with Earthlink for each of the Webpages they provide, all forwarded to my main e-mail address for Rob Realname.
Comes in handy having shalestone@earthlink.net to use with all my Web activity.
I have a Yahoo e-mail that I don't actually use except to logon to a couple of Yahoo affiliated places.

I have 3--one at work, one at home that is "public" and shared with my husband, and one at Yahoo that's just for me only.

Not counting work email (and one of those is enough), I can get by with 1 private email but 2 is more than enough.
