Drug/Alcohol Abuse and family Empty Drug/Alcohol Abuse and family

another thread just asked about paranoia if mental illness runs in the family, so I thought I would ask if you would be paranoid of becoming a drug addict/alcoholic if that was rampant in your family?

My grandmother and 3 uncles were alcoholics. My sister was a drug addict (i think she was self medicating her schizophrenia). Because of this, I have never had any interest in drinking/drugs. I have never had an addictive personality, but don't want to push it. I never take addictive pain killers or medication and ask the doctors for non addictive alternatives.

    do you do the same?

My grandfather was an alcoholic, my grandmother drank a lot but was never as drunk as Grandpa, grandpa got stomach cancer from drinking and died; my mother has NEVER had a drink in her life and never will, I think she's convinced she'd automatically be a drunk like them.

When I turned 21 and pulled out a bottle of champagne my sister had bought me for the occasion (3 months earlier and had it gift wrapped), I got the alcoholic lecture, 'hiding things, that's what alcoholics do'. It never occurred to them that if I was an alcoholic or was going to be one, that bottle would not have still been sealed and gift wrapped 3 months later, it would've been empty long ago. My other sister got 2 other bottles of champagne for it, those immediately went down the drain because they were like rocket fuel, the first bottle was really the only one I drank and it took 2 months to do that because I limit myself to only 2 drinks of anything in one day, or rather night. Am I worried about becoming an alcoholic just because my grandparents were? No, of course not.

I've had a few alchoholics and drug addicts related by blood. Never worried me either.

Have a couple of uncles who smoked that stuff. But it never affected me. I'm not interested in being a drug or alcohol addict.

Yes there are a few drunks on both sides of my family, but I'm not one of them.

I'm not aware of any drug addicts (aside from a few casual pot smokers), but alcoholism exists in my family on my dads side.

I can only speak for my ma's side. But yes we have both alcoholics and drug addicts.
