Here is the situation...A young motocross racer of age 22 gets cancer. His best friend, also a racer, knows that the kid doesn't have insurance so he starts a raffle. The friend sells tickets to raffle off his own mx race bike to raise cash.

The thing is, if you win, people are already expecting that you would "do the right thing" and give the guy back his bike.

I was witness to this type of raffle and I couldn't believe that the general vibe/assumption was that the winner was expected to give back the bike.

I honestly thought that what they should have just done is fix the raffle to make sure someone won who would give the bike back. Instead, they didn't "fix it" and some chick who bought a ticket at a bar won it. She had zero intention of giving it back, then everyone bitched about it.

FYI, this situation happened a couple years ago, and he is now in remission and leading a very productive and healthy life.

So, do you think those running it were realistic or did they have their head in the sand over how it would all turn out?

Glad to hear he's in remission. Someone at work wanted to do exactly this for me at work (for my house being destroyed in the flood)--do a 50/50, and "expect" the winner to turn the money over. What is the point.. in that case, just ask donations/gift cards.

Personally i found it ridiculous. The whole point of a contest is to win something.

Instead of raffling off an item that the person really doesn't want to give away, he could've raffled off himself in services; stuff like I'll mow your lawn for a month if you win, clean your garage--stuff like that. He's still raising funds, yet giving something back in return that is of value and probably appreciated by most.

The point of a raffle was to win something. The friend looks like he is being a good friend & willing to sacrifice. That's what friends do. Expecting the winner to return it is unreasonable. A nice gesture maybe, but it shouldn't be expected.

Next time they should just have a yard or bake sale & accept donations to the cause as well.

Someone organized a 50/50 raffle for us when my son was injured. And I honestly never found out the winner but would have never thought they would give their money to us.

First, that is great news that he's in remission. Second, I think it's unrealistic for people to expect/assume that the winner (especially some stranger) would turn the prize over.

I hate things like this. If I paid for something, I'm not about to give it away unless I bought it as a gift to begin with. I do agree that they should have just did a fundraiser, or raffle off something else.
