Do you think cats are smarter than dogs?

In general, is one species more intelligent than the other or does it come down to each individual animal?

Some years back I read an article a woman wrote saying dogs are sooo much smarter than cats even though she admitted her own dog, when the door is slightly ajar, will try to open it by pressing his head against the door which instead closes it, but she still insisted dogs were smarter.

I think as a whole cats are the more intelligent ones but I don't really know if it's so much that as just since they are the more curious of the creatures, they will venture into places dogs can't and come up with very interesting ways to not only get around, but to get things they want. When was the last time we heard about a dog burglar that was stealing the neighborhood's underwear?

Of course I think Buster Keaton's dog Elmer, a St. Bernard, was a VERY smart dog because even though he as all dogs, HATED going to the vet, one night he got a rose thorn in his paw, went up to the vet's house by himself, whined until he was let in, and once the thorn was removed, went back home and nobody ever noticed he was gone. But between the two I think cats have a slight advantage on the canine breed.

No. Cats are just more cautious and hesitant. I think dogs are smarter.

I think dogs seem like they're smarter because they're easier to train but maybe it's really cats because they're smart enough not to let their owners train them to fetch, roll over, etc. Still, we're never going to see a TV show where a tabby comes running up to the farm house meowing it's head off and the father says to it, "What's that Mittens? Timmy fell down the well?!"

Cats are no slouch but gotta give the edge to dogs. Mine shows guilt when he does something wrong. The cats don't care lol

Some cats can be trained, though--one of mine is a Maine Coon and he'll play "fetch" with a paper Dixie cup. Both my cats are leash-trained, and they love to walk around the yard when I take them outside.

Hard to say. I think they both are about the same when it comes to overall alertness. Dogs are simply easier to train and to get in line with your own sensibilities.

Yes I do. Cats are much more intuitive than dogs. Whereas dogs go investigate when something's wrong, cats are smart enough to know to get the hell out of dodge.

Cats are a lot smarter than people give them credit for. My cat was real smart, she came to me when I whistled or called her name, I taught her to fetch the ball and bring it back to me and we used to play hide and seek too!

I've had cats that played hide and seek.

Especially when they destroyed something or shit on the carpet.

In general, as a species dogs are more intellegent than cats. They have larger brains, are capable of learning more complex problem solving skills and are easier trained than cats. That's just a fact of biology as sure as chimpanzees are more intellegent than dogs and humans more intellegent than chimpanzees. This isn't a question of what I believe, it's a question of scientific fact.

The order of intellegence as measured between different species is this:
