It died in 1997. 1996 was the absolute last good, solid year for hip-hop.

True. Very true. 1996 was the year of "If I Ruled the World" and "ATLiens," one year later there was "Mo' Money, Mo' Problems." However, I could absent-mindedly tolerate it through 2001. From 2002 on up, it's been an atrocity. In that four year span, it went from shallow to utterly buffoonish.

Yup. I mean, it had it's few and far in between bright spots over the last decade....mainly Kanye (even though he's a jerk) and Lupe Fiasco. Several artists have put out decent albums here and there but nothing spectacular.

I consider the '00s to be Hip Hop's lost decade. By the end of it (today) there are few real 'stars' and strong personalities (save Kanye, T.I., Drake and Lil Wayne, although I can't stand Lil' Wayne.) The scene has deteriorated into a bunch of generic, disposable, club thumping silliness by acts whose name no one remembers. I hope Hip Hop regains a personality in the '10s.

I like Wayne. I know a lot of people don't and that's because he's everywhere.........but seriously, he's really talented. I haven't been too impressed with the majority of his new stuff though........Wayne has been putting out so much music that eventually it started not to sound like anything. He wasn't saying anything. The first two Carters, great albums. I've always liked his mixtapes. He needs to revert back to '04, '05 and get it together.

Taking a break from the music for a second, I found this clip and it was interesting IMO. It's about colorism in Hip Hop.

^^ You just did. If you can't find it on iTunes......convert the song from video to mp3 format.
