Re: Your opinion of "Time Out"?
It depends on the infraction.

Re: Your opinion of "Time Out"?
It also depends on the kid. But I'd say no for the most part.

Re: Your opinion of "Time Out"?
I made my daughter stand in a corner a few times, and it was probably agony for her since she was ADD. But the problem with that was having to stay close-by to make sure she stayed turned to the wall. It was punishment for me, too.

My mom did the corner thing too, only with us it wasn't a corner, it was the side of the fridge, and believe me we stayed. I don't know how long it was for but it felt like half an hour every time. I'd rather get spanked than have to do that.

My 2nd grade teacher used the nose-to-the-cabinet-doors most of the time. She'd place a piece of tape on the door and we had to keep our nose on it for the endurance.
One time while standing at the cabinet door I let out the most outrageously loud fart imaginable. Class howled but the teacher ignored it (whew!).

Re: Your opinion of "Time Out"?
It works for some things. Parents probably make the biggest mistake by threatening "a time out when we get home" then don't follow through.

Re: Your opinion of "Time Out"?
Yes if it works. It all depends on the personality of the kid and the severity of the infraction. If he or she hates it enough to straighten out, then there you go.

Time out's CAN work but I think touchy-feely parenting philosophies overrate it's usefulness.

Re: Your opinion of "Time Out"?
It made me laugh. Real punishment was getting a whooping, or getting something taken away from me, or (the worst) being made to sit or tag along quietly all day with whatever adult administered the punishment! Maybe it would work today if they child is made to sit in a windowless unfurnished room with nothing but his own thoughts, though I'd hate to think of the therapy bills later.
Don't know if anyone remembers this old joke: "White folks have Time Out...black folks have Time's Up!" I want to say it was Sinbad but I can't remember. But yeah....time out was NEVER uttered in my household. More like, "That's it, go get a switch!"
