Imagine if people were automatically sterilized at birth, but everyone was offered a free 'reversal' once they decided they were ready to start a family. Do you think it would such a system would benefit society?

Maybe yes, maybe no....but you'd still wind up with a bunch of knucklehead parents. Just like when idiots can decide to marry on a whim.

Unfortunately, I think many people have no idea how good or bad they'd make as parents until it happens. Even "good" parents could be caught off-guard when faced with surprises, like a difficult child, or other circumstances that they can't handle.

There's be few to zero cases of teen pregnancies (assuming you'd have to an adult to decide whether or not you'd like it reversed)... maybe it would be a good thing.

Who knows. They don't need to find out.

I think people just need to be held to a higher standard when it comes to having children is all. No need to tamper with nature in such a way.

No I say that people who aren't ready or interested in being parents just be more responsible. If after they become adults they want to go and get themselves fixed, then have at it.

Yeah, what if the reversal didn't work? I'd never be for it.

Plus, you'd probably see STD's skyrocket because naive people would start having more casual sex since they'd think they couldn't get pregnant. (And as a result, they'd also likely be "unprotected" as well.) Doesn't sound like a smart decision for me.

How about we simply teach people to not have sex until they can handle the consequences? It's called living responsibly! We gotta stop sanctioning irresponsibility.

Maybe from a monetary standpoint but poorer in many other ways.

As a hypothetical sci-fi social concept, yes it would benefit society by cutting down on unwanted teen pregnancies.

For the 'be natural' ppl, remember that teen pregnancies are natural. "old enuf to bleed - old enuf to breed" is the natural order of things - and in simpler, agrarian/hunter gatherer tribes it worked well. But in our more complex society it just creates a burden for these teens with no support system except our dwindling public dole.

In my sci-fi scenario, ppl would not have the reversal without passing a required course in parenting. Again, the natural close-knit tribal ppl used to do this as well, teaching the cultural truisms that worked for them.
